Its a shame but most wont have a clue about this set you have posted. The USS Arizona was sunk by
the Japanese on Dec 7th 1941 at Pearl Harbor and is still seeping oil from its fuel tanks. The Mighty Mo.
is the USS Missouri which was a Iowa class battleship (four were built the Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin
and the Missouri) the terms of surrender were signed on the Missouri. Nice set I'm old enough to
remember.

I was mainly talking about the first shot.

Agree on both. I've seen it three times over the years, which is enough. I think everyone visiting Oahu should try to go there once. If for nothing more than to reflect upon the price of our freedom, and to remember some of those who paid it. I was happy to take my daughter and two grandchildren last time; a good place for a history lesson. I would love to visit the the Normandy cemetery and memorial, bit that's not likely to happen.

Pay a visit to Arlington in DC. Very moving, and it'll revive the patriotism and respect you have for these people, no matter who you are.

Ohhh, I like these the most. I've never seen the entire harbor except for black and white footage of the 1940s.

So basically the Arizona was docked right where you were standing when the attack happened?

yes, exaclty. the poor souls on the boat never knew or had a chance to do anything about it. a torpedo hit the ship, and set off the powder charges for the canons. plenty of black and white footage of the actual explosion taking place.

a very solemn place to visit, but very meaningful. a small trip onto ford island, and there are still bullet holes in buildings..

there is a second memorial on the back side of ford island 90% of people dont even know its there.

i was stationed there for a year. lots of great history there.

I've been there multiple times over the years. Taken the extended tour of the USS Missouri as well with my father-in-law who is a huge WWII buff.

One of the most interesting things about that site isn't just where the USS Arizona is located, but the fact that on the Missouri, you can find a plaque where the instrument of surrender was signed by the Japanese and Americans. The boat was obviously not sitting in Pearl Harbor when they signed it, but still, I think it's pretty cool.

So, you can stand next to that plaque on the USS Missouri, and in one shot get the exact place where the war started for America (USS Arizona) and the place where the war ended (USS Missouri).

This thread made me emotional. I was stationed on Shafter about 10 years ago, and any new Soldiers we got i personally took them to the Memorial and 'learned' them a thing or two.

The leaking oil still gets me... 'It will continue to leak, until all survivors are gone..."

It should make everyone emotional.

It's a crying shame they essentially don;t teach history in schools anymore. I was talking to a 20s something guy the other day....he had no clue about Vietnam, let alone World War ll.

I think this is not at all a good thing.
