My 10 year old daughter is having a "fashion show" bday party.
My wife put me as the official paparazzi.

I don't have any soft boxes or studio equipment.
What would be the easier and most economical way to do this?

lights? Umbrella? Backdrop? What would be the minimum to rent.

bw! About 10-12

the room is about 14x30. But it needs a runway too... I figure I can make whatever size I need...

This could actually be reallllly fun for all parties involved!

Because you won't have enough on your hands.... you could have one camera tethered to a computer pushing images to a huge screen(a tv?) and another angle covered with a second camera?

make a party of it?

I have been accused of being over the top. meh. yeah!

Pick up a Flash bracket and a hot shoe cord under $25 for both it would be the easiest "Paparazzi" set up with good results... if you want to spend more pick up yn 560 III flashes and a single YN rf -603 II trigger the flashes have built in receivers and are cheap if you want to get a modifier pick up a cowboy studio 24 soft box and a couple of shoot through umbrellas and stands and umbrella brackets. Buying kit you have no idea how to use on top of kit you already have no idea how to use is rarely a good idea

... or he could read the guide I referenced and be able to do what he wanted to do with minimal outlay. I don't think $25 is going to break the bank for anyone for what I suggested and if he wanted to spend more I gave him some suggestions

on the other hand, Lexar's wife has given him specific direction to record in the appropriate manner their little girl's 10th birthday bash. Any man with a pulse should seize an opportunity such as this to acquire some new gadgets. Being that said man does indeed have a pulse, he should be able to either figure out how to use the gear, or sufficiently obfuscate his lack of knowledge so as to repel any potential negative side effects of purchasing the afore mentioned new gadgets.

godspeed Lexar, godspeed.

I wasn't really getting at you Joe, and it has nothing to do with the money..... I tink my comments above and his response kind of say it.

You guys are great! :)

To answer some questions.. I have no experience whatsoever with studio lighting, soft boxes, or strobes.
I have used bounce flash many times with good results. But doubt I will have tons of time to practice all the stuff. Do you think it will take that long to setup and figure out?!?

Maybe as joe.kelley suggested an off camera bracket with cord is my best option?!?

Will that give me better results then on a regular bounce flash shot?

There is a learning curve to studio lighting. Its not incredibly difficult, but few get it right the first time. Personally I dont see any significant advantage of the bracket over bounce. A bracket can be nice if you have a large enough modifier to make a difference, but even the small softboxes only have much an effect at a few feet so it may not do what you want.

What would be the easier and most economical way to do this?

lights? Umbrella? Backdrop? What would be the minimum to rent.

Simplest and most straight forward setup is to use two umbrellas and two lights. Examples:

IMAGE: http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r601/kevinlillard/04172014b/20182013a0054_zps25dbb5cb.jpg

IMAGE: http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r601/kevinlillard/04172014b/20182013a0087_zps9d0cd8f6.jpg

Light is bounced off the inside of the umbrellas and the umbrellas are elevated four or five feet and located about ten feet apart. The size of the umbrellas doesn't matter and shoe mount flash or monolights will work equally well.

In these examples, small and inexpensive monolights and 45-inch umbrellas were used.

Backdrop and stand came from the inexpensive products offered by Cowboy Studio. (external link)

Whilst I don't particularly go for very flat lighting - it is easy to set up. However the above comment is wrong as the size of the light source (umberella) matters a lot. The smaller the light source the harder the light.

A 45" brolly is a fairly large light source (when used fairly close) so provides a large coverage and soft light.
