Just curious, what are the predictions for good and exciting lenses to come from Canon? Sigma seems to be stealing the show completely.

What is the on the horizon?
- 35 L II?
- 14-24 F/2.8?
- 85 f/1.4 L?
- 135 L II with IS?

Time to head over to the Rumor Forum. Lots od heated discussions going on about all sorts of rumors. Also, check out Canon Rumor (external link)s (CR)

Canon doesn't invent much exciting stuff any more. And if they do, it'll be expensive.

Nothing wrong, but innovation and competition is not bad either. Looks at Sigma with their new 35 and 50 mm. Not bad for a very competitive price.

Canon still needs to come up with 14-24, I believe:-)

I think the next biggest thing from Canon is probably going to be the 5D mark iv

Heya,

I was excited how just the past year, they released a nice prime that wasn't $1k+. I'd love to see more releases like the 35 F2 IS. I'd love to see a 20 F2 IS. I'd also love to see an ultrawide prime that isn't `L, like a 16mm F2.8 prime from Canon. I'm never excited for their zooms, as they're just too costly for me to even pay attention, I go with Tamron for zooms. But, I would like to see a non-L wide angle zoom with wide aperture. Tokina has the 16-28 F2.8 for full frame, at a very good price. I'd love to see Canon compete with a similar non-L ultrawide with wide aperture. I just don't want to pay for the 16-35 f2.8 when I can get the Tokina 16-28 F2.8 for less than half the cost.

If Canon redid the 85 F1.8 to be an 85 F2 IS, that would be neat too. Granted, I'd also like to see a 200 F2.8 IS that isn't an L and is also black.

Very best,

People like to make this claim a lot lately... it's false, but people like to claim it.

Dual Pixel AF; IS primes for under $700 with very good optics; 24-120mm equivalent f/2-3.9 compact near APS-C sensor camera; and continued class leading AF system

There's a few things they've come up with recently that people conveniently seem to neglect. I'm no Canon fanboy, but I like to give credit where it's do and all of the stuff I just listed is nothing to shake a stick at.

And look at Canon's recent 24mm IS, 28mm IS, 40mm pancake and 35mm IS... all great lenses at great price points.

I don't get why everyone wants every company to make the exact same lenses... the thing that makes Canon's lens lineup great is all the niche lenses they offer imo. My friends MP-E 65mm comes to mind.

It seems lately, Canon has been delivering lenses no body asked for or that have more compromises than the products they replace at a price no one can afford. Certainly nothing they've done excites me.

Thankfully I'm happy with my kit.

Not seeing your point. The new IS primes were all replacements for very old screw drive primes, the lenses the replaced had the exact same apertures and the new optics are huge improvements over the old ones and include IS... the price difference makes sense. And the 40mm pancake is awesome and sells as well as... well, pancakes :p

Let's see... a new 24, 28, and 35 with IS , but no 50, 85, or 135 with IS? Does that seem like the right priority to you?

And a new 24-70 f/2.8 without IS that costs twice as much as it's predecessor?

And they "replace" the super versatile 24-105 f/4 Kit lens with a less versatile 24-70 f/4 that costs a lot more?

Product Management at Canon is drunk.

I agree about the 24-105, even if the new 24-70/4 is a better performer. As for the other lenses though, the 24-70mk2 is significantly better than it's predecesor. And my guess is the 50/1.8 and 135/2.8 are on the horizon next from Canon, then it'd surprise me if the USM lenses weren't next after that. The thing is, the 85/1.8 and 100/2 are already excellent lenses and they sell well, it makes sense not to put them at the top of the update list.

My guess is mirrorless evolution will move to the front burner!

Heya,

My only disappointment with the latest mid-tier primes, is that while they gained IS, they seem to roll in at F2.8 instead of F2, or even F1.8. I'm not sure how IS works, I'm guessing heavier larger glass for those wider apertures would be harder to move for their current IS mechanics, and therefore to ensure quality they made them lighter, coming in at F2.8. But I don't know that at all, other than a gut feeling which could be completely wrong.

I really want an EF 20mm F2 IS. Not a F2.8 IS. Granted, the current 20mm is F2.8 with no IS.

Then again, I really want 24mm F1.4, but I don't want to buy `L just to get it. And I'm not quite ready to go to a manual lens for it (Samyang 24 F1.4).

Very best,

The 40 and the 35 are the only new ones I find interesting, but not exactly exciting. Then there's the 200-400: exciting, but not exactly affordable.
