At what # would you consider not buying a used body? I was thinking about upgrading my body and have been looking at used bodies with counts from in the hundreds to hundreds of thousands of actuations. Just curious. Thanks

A shutter can be replaced for a couple hundred bucks. If I could get my hands on a 5D3 for $1000 with 200,000 shutter actuations I wouldn't hesitate. I am serious....and don't call me Shirley.

Apr 16, 2014 22:16 | #3 to me its like a diesel truck, sure the engine is made to last a million km but the rest of the truck will fall apart after a few hundred thousand, sure u can replace a shutter but the rest of the components have tons of use,as mentioned above the price would have to dictate how many i would accept,i would buy a 6d with 50k on it but it would have to be cheap, OLYMPUS EM1 M2. 12-100 F4 PRO.75mm f1.8,fisheye f1.8 pro. If I found a 1D X that was used at the Olympics with 800,000 shutter count on it for $3,500, I'd buy the 1D X instantly and replace the shutter when I got it.

In the camera body there are relatively few moving parts. You have the shutter, mirror and the buttons and knobs. A camera with a high fps can burn through a lot of shutter actuations with little wear on the rest of the camera. I average about 250 shots for a marching band performance and if I do 4 bands where I have friends and family per competition, that's 1000 shots in a single day where I may have made less than 10 changes to other settings on the camera. If I did something similar with other sports and such 2 days per week I would be well over 100k clicks with a camera that was 1 yr old and used about 100 times. That doesn't scare me at all. I would make sure it was properly depreciated before I bought it of course. I'm not going to pay top dollar for it. But if the price were right it wouldn't scare me. I am serious....and don't call me Shirley.

What about taking video? How does that work? At 30 frames per second, does that mean the shutter open and closes 30 times per second? That would mean that 1 hour of video, the shutter opened and closed 108,000 times> 30x60x60 or am I missing something? If that were the case then cameras would last for a week with people who took their cameras on vacation and filmed video on the trip. It's an electronic shutter for video, which has the disadvantage of giving a rolling effect to footage.
