Hi everybody. I wanted to say a few things about my 2 weeks old fuji x100s and as i know this forum is not anymore only canon specific i couldnt find any section which would fit the fuji in. So i thought id compare it to my Canon 6D to make it a little less offtopic. I hope you may forgive me

First of all, yes, the 6D has a full frame sensor and yes its a DSLR. It has ability to use hundreds if not thousends of lenses. The fuji can use only one. The one with which it comes with because its a fixed lens.

I always wanted a smaller camera for my everyday shooting purposes as well as spontanous landscape shots and street photography. But as the Sony A7r came out i was totally disappointed because (now after trying it again i know there were shi.tty settings configured) it had slow AF and an ugly EVF. Then i thought lets give that fuji a try and here a few things compared to my 6D. I have to mention that i was a complete DSLR maniac as i got really fast disappointed about AF not beeing so fast like on a DSLR and other things.

Hybrid Viewfinder
I was completely wrong about that EVFs are crap. Also the hybrid viewfinder allows to use an optical viewfinder which is a very great plus. The informations and display resolution etc are very nicely done by fuji. Sometimes i miss the EVF now on my 6D!
However there is noticeble parallax going on when looking through the optical viewfinder. One of the things which made me be more careful while framing coming from a DSLR.

Settings, Menu and Customization
I didnt thought that those small mirrorless cameras come with such a customizable interface. Actually i think it can do a few things my 6D cant. Few quirks here and there but all in all its a solid and professional feeling while shooting and setting up. It also has nice custom shooting styles which you can combine for your SOOC jpegs. A great bonus if you ask me and like david hobby said: somewhere in NYC a hipsters head exploded because of that sexy custom shooting styles

ISO and lowlight
This was a point which surprised me the most. I know the newer APS-C sensors are much better in that regard compared to what we had 5 years ago (having a 650D also). But the Fuji blows the high iso of my 650D away. I may even say it is about 1 stop less good than my 6D!! (YES I SAID IT). ISO 6400 looks still usable on the fuji which is terrific for that small camera. Im amazed fuji great job on that new sensor! More kudos on the sensor in the next point:

The Sensor and the Lens
The sensor is like i said amazing. It is very capable in lowlight paired with the f2 lens. But what i like the most is that it has a unique pattern of pixel array. It randomizes the pixels on the sensor that way, that if shooting at high iso and introducing more noise the noise looks more natural than on any DSLR ive used so far. It is very similiar to the film-camera-look from 20 years ago. Did i say im amazed?

The lens is also made of high quality optics resulting in very sharp images (also because theres no optical lowpass filter). Compared to my 6D the 6D can only compete its sharpness because it has a bit more than 4mpx more and that only with a sharp lens like my 24L tilt shift ii or a 135L. The sharpness from that combination of a nice lens, no lowpass filter and the new sensor on the x100s is great.

AF
Im a very picky guy when it comes to autofocus. Here the 6D wins clearly. I had bought the fuji also because i heard the MF is very nice to use with a few different options but ive never used it because it focuses so damn right. Sometimes it misses, and it misses obviously more than my 6D but it is fast and nails it 95% of the time (for me). And when it nails though! The on sensor AF is very fast almost up to DSLR standards if you ask me.

Handling
Not much here. Different than a 6D or any other DSLR but definitely very intuitive and usable. Fits nice in the hand and better on the neck than a 6D with a fat tele lens attached to it ;)

The camera looks amazing and is so damn small that i carry it everywhere with me. Even if i go out to intentionally take photos with my 6D.
I was born too late that i never used a rangefinder, but with this masterpiece i know how it must have felt.

I guess i gotta sell my 650D because the fuji is better in my eyes as well as sexier and smaller. I might also say that it is so capable that i would shoot a whole wedding only with that x100s! It is not only for the amateur or advanced amateur but also for pros and strong enthusiasts like i am.

I hope you liked it as i never wrote a review so feedback is welcomed!

Agree with you on all of these points.

I was very impressed with the Fuji as far as high iso goes (before I had a 6D).

Mirrorless camera sensors have come a long way.

Personally, I find the fixed focal length a bit limiting but it just becomes a different tool.
I could see doing a wedding with it but that would take some skills to pull off.

Might pick up the 50mm equivalent FOV adapter when it comes out.

Apparently the Xe-2 has the same sensor. A bit more bulk when you have additional lenses, but that would be a heck of a kit to own. Lots of performance in your pocket (and my x100s goes everywhere with me, unlike the 6D / 7D)

Have fun with it.

a DSLR is for versatility,
a fixed lens camera is a one trick pony.

That doesn't mean they are bad, but comparing to two is like.....
well like comparing apples to oranges.

Thats true but i dont feel limited too much. I use it different than my DSLR. The fuji should replace my iPhone because i hate taking pictures with an iphone. A DSLR cant do this job as it is simply too big to carry around all days. And im anyway a prime-shooter so i am very flexible when it comes to single lens setups.

It is yes, but in a different way than i thought first.

I thought they are not comparable because they are not the same sensor size and overall size and quality.

I was all wrong. I just wanted to show up that those small unobtrusive cameras are coming very near to what a very good Fullframe DSLR (and the 6D is more than a capable camera) offers.

Why not? i mean that apple tastes almost like an orange! :-P

I dont want to promise too much to anyone who is on the fence for a mirrorless camera, but id say go for it...

How about some side by side comparison photos at ISO above 1600?

Was checking the web as i dont have a lot of time today but found this:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/52931101 (external link)

Althought they do not say it is amazing i find so.

I have to mention that i use it differnetly than my 6D. I use the fuji to capture moments and my 6D to capture high quality scenes.

However, if you look at those samples and remember that the fuji has a 1.6 times smaller sensor it is impressive. Also when stopped down it matches the 6Ds quality. Lowering the ISO does even better job

David, I totally agree with you. I have the older X100 and am always amazed at the quality the camera produces. It travels with me everywhere I go.

I also have the wide angle adapter that makes it a 28mm lens. Really cannot notice any image degradation from using this adapter. Can't wait until the 50mm is available. That would give me the most compact 50mm, 35mm and 28mm kit out there. Fantastic.

Im very surprised also from the 35mm FOV as im more the 50mm guy. But how it looks im used to any prime lens. I feel like im just rethinking my framing in my imagination..

Do you have a link to the 28 mm wide angle adapter? Or to some sort of review? Does it remain an f/2 ? lens with the adapter fitted?

Here a review of the adapter

http://www.ephotozine.com …version-lens-review-22281 (external link)

It remains an F2 lens. I've had mine for a few months now and really don't see any image quality degradation. Would like it a little more compact, but with that said it is much smaller than any 28mm lens out there. I'm awaiting the release of the 50mm version. That would make one hell of a great walk around system that is extremely compact.

Not to hijack the threads, but what are your thoughts in terms of the 6D + 40mm pancake vs Fuji x100s?

I'm seriously considering purchasing an x100s as an everyday camera, but I'm unsure if it'll serve that purpose that I'm looking for. Is the x100s small enough so that it fits in a jacket pocket?
