Previous contest #515

The game will last 1 week and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only. Feel free to comment and/or ask questions at any time. This is a good competition for learning new methods, so let's make it a bit more dynamic. I will be judging edits, not comments. Feel free to comment on the original image as well.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #517".

This one will be a long one because of the Easter Holiday. Submissions end, Friday, April 25, 2014 at Noon (EST) and a winner will be announced.

Please let me know if there is an issue with this RAW file, I have never shared anything via Google Drive before, and if this doesn't work, I might have to find another host.

Edited the .CR2 in Camera Raw,
Opened in Photoshop and cropped,
Cloned out a few distracting spots,
Added iris blur,
Painted some colour and shape back into the little guy's face,
Moved and subdued the 'catchlights' in his eyes,
Added a light in the upper-right via several layers + the gradient tool,
Added vignetting and darkened the left hand side via curves + layer masks,
Shifted hue slightly and lowered saturation a touch,
Added yellow to the highlights and blue/red to the shadows via levels,
Added a gradient map layer (blue/red/yellow)
Sharpened up his face and eyes via a high pass layer set to linear light.

And that's about everything! I've only been using Photoshop for a couple of months, and I'm having a lot of fun with it so far.
The image does seem a little less saturated online when compared to in Photoshop, not sure why that is... but there we are.

I can't comment on the RAW download because I just copied and pasted the JPG above.
Duplicated background and used this video tutorial for the water and reflection (external link).
Added a hue/saturation layer for a slight saturation boost.
Found the boat, cut, paste, and mask.
Added a curves layer clipped to the boat layer to adjust tone.
Added a blank layer set to soft light and brushed with a soft black brush here and there.
Added a color balance layer to tweek the colors just a bit.

You're welcome! How did you like that Marty guy? Sounds like a robot but very clear and easy to understand!

You might also be interested in checking out "Before And After #391" where I used another program to help create the effect there. It's really cool but not sure what operating systems it works with other than Windows, I used it with XP at the time and haven't tried it with Vista or 7 yet.

Here's a quick link to the program >>click<<, (external link)

It's called Sqirlzs Water Reflections 2.6, Animated Water Reflection Freeware.

frenchfx: I laughed when I saw yours... I have 2 out of 3 of those guys!
-Douglas- the water was cool, but the longboat sealed the deal for me.

Thanks Mark. :) The scene needed a little extra something after the reflection was added!
