Amazon to charge sales tax in Florida, May 1

Hmm i guess sooner or later it's going to be for all states except those that don't have sales tax (like Oregon).

this is not good, if i only new earlier... oh well this may be my last year as a member of prime.

I wonder when B&H and Adorama will be eventually forced to collect tax too... That will be a sad day for sure.

I don't know if they will since they do operate brick and mortar stores so they're only required to charge sales tax for NYC.

I forgot about warehouses even though I buy from Newegg all the time and have to pay sales tax since I live in Jersey.

I've been paying sales tax with Amazon from about day one. First, when I lived in AZ and then when I moved to KY. Amazon had a distribution location in both states so it's nothing new for me. Sometimes I get around the sales tax by opting for another out of state seller listed on Amazon.

I also noticed that if the actual seller is not amazon but fulfilled by amazon which is eligible for prime 2-day shipping, there's no tax even though amazon is the one shipping it.

Sometimes this end up being cheaper.

Yes, I walked down the driveway one morning this week and there it was on the front page of the paper. MAY 1, Amazon will start collecting Sales Tax in Fla.

Hopefully they get it right and only charge us 6%, Canon's Loyalty Program insists on charging us 7%

There is a story being floated that Amazon might buy Sears and KMart, and use their 2400 locations to instantly get a brick and motar footprint. If this happens, they'll charge tax everywhere.

Technically speaking, Florida has a use tax of 6%.. so you are supposed to pay that to the state if you buy online and aren't charged sales tax.. So really its nothing new as you should have been paying tax anyway

And the REAL story is they built in a parts of Florida that are packed full of lowest of low wage migrant picking workers. So say goodbye to even more American jobs as this new fulfillment center will be full of Illegals using fake papers. Makes the governor look like a clown while bragging about creating 3000 jobs (at my expense) for migrant workers who wont put one penny back into the US economy.

Pretty sure that was a strategic move knowing that Ruskin is famous for dirt cheap picking labor. Which is also near Immokalee (an old slave town) which is also loaded with cheap labor and where slaves are still kept to this very day. Also the area in Lakeland where the other facility is going up is an ever so slightly higher class area but also home to a large mix of legal and illegal migrant workers. So Amazon is staying ahead of the curve by avoiding the one thing that Walmart does which is hire Americans.

America is full of Illegals, so why pick on FL? Because we have no state income tax?

And yes, Lakeland has a fair share of problems--even gang--and it is known as a heavy Agriculture area. And yes, Immokalee is poor but is it necessary to throw in that it was a slave town? This is the deep south we're talking about, here.

Where would you put the centers, affluent areas like Aventura? Jupiter? Dunedin? Dr. Phillips?

And at least you'll never have to try a slip-and-fall/P.I. case against Amazon, as it is nearly impossible to win a verdict against the fear-mongering Arkansas-based monolith. But as much as I hate Wal-Mart, at least they too--along with CVS--have a distribution center near me that employs a lot of fairly unskilled or undereducated people.
