Besides, people need some way to demonstrate their ignorance to the world.

One thing I find odd about homonym errors: when an error is made, the person writes the correct spelling of the wrong word. People confuse "break" and "brake," but they don't write "brayk" or "braic." Simple misspellings would show more randomness. Somehow the partner of the correct word is stored in their brains, spelled right, but they open the wrong drawer.

Automatic spell checkers will catch "brayk" or "braic" but won't catch "brake" used in the place of "break".

So, how are you this morning? I'm doing "good"....

That's great. I'm doing "well", myself.

I'm silently correcting your grammatical errors. ;)

As an employer, I had a right to not hire such people, since I wouldn't want them representing the company in any manner, much less a professional one.

I have thrown away applications because the person filled it out with some text speak. I tossed one in front of the person who handed it to me, he asked why wouldn't I take the time to read it. I replied because you couldn't take the time to use English.

I think showing them how their applications gets thrown away is the only way to teach some people that they need to consider what other people feel about their writing skills. In lots of job positions, it's required to be able to communicate in writing with customers. And a customer who think they got something written by a 7yo isn't exactly impressed. They most definitely don't want to pay premium prices if they aren't convinced they will get premium products.

'I would have been a great photographer if I had a better camera'.

That should have been "I would have been a great photographer if I had had a better camera."

One of my chat room favorites: Your stupid.

Responding with good is a hard mistake not to make anymore, sometimes I'll do it and realize as I'm saying it. It's used so much it sounds normal any more even though I'm still correcting anyone who uses it.

"Your stupid" is one of my favorites as well. It's like a calling card, instantly indicating who the stupid one is.

Maybe "I'm doing good" has become a set phrase that people use because they're adopting a casual tone in the conversation, not because they don't know better, like "You done good" and "My bad."
