Maybe "I'm doing good" has become a set phrase that people use because they're adopting a casual tone in the conversation, not because they don't know better, like "You done good" and "My bad."

Yeah, as mistakes go it's not one that bothers me a whole lot. If I'm correcting it mentally it's more out of amusement that I noticed it.

And a Scot who's a wee bit fey at that!

I learned my grammar in a little one-room schoolhouse nestled in a dingle, or perhaps it was a cwm, I forget which.

I love English! Any rule you can name has a plurality of exceptions.

Sorry, but I'm fine with "I'm doing good" as opposed to "I'm doing well"..."well" might be a "polite" way of putting things, but "good to me communicates more, especially compared to "bad" (or "badly(?))!

What I'm saying, is that "proper" English can, well, be a crock! :)

A couple of years back, a Glaswegian mate had to present a workshop to a group of Lao with limited English skills. He was introduced by a young Lao woman with exceptional English skills. She introduced him thus - 'This is Mr Neil. I'll have to translate for him because he doesn't speak English very well'. Faux pas or fact?

I blame my 7th grade teacher. She was a grammar ****.... but proper English became ingrained on my memory. For the record, I'm not offended nor do I look down on a person who replies "I'm doing good." I can't help myself from the silent correction, however. ;)

When I make grammatical errors myself, I cringe. I seldom make them when I'm speaking but I do when I'm typing, for some reason. It's embarrassing.

Note: the **** is not a cuss word but one that won't make it by the auto censor here.

Perhaps the person who says, "I'm doing good," means that he/she is engaged in good works.

And we all understand that your "****" means that, grammatically, your 7th grade teacher was or acted as though she were a member of the National Socialist party.

A typical conversation:

Me: "How are you?"
Person: "I'm good."
Me: "Bragging again!"

And if you don't get it, then you really don't know English.

Seriously, this is a case where, In My Opinion, common use trumps "proper"...

In fact, if you're interested, I came across an interesting little write-up when I Googled "Use of 'I am going good'":

And, of course, there's proper English and English that's proper. If Elvis had sung, "You are nothing but a hound dog," instead of,' "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog," it would have been more grammatically correct, but it just wouldn't have had the same zing.

Reminds me of my favorite line from Blazing Saddles:

"They said you was hung."
"And they was right!"

"Be seeing you."
