As the title states, has anyone worn out the rear dial on their camera? Not the d-pad, but the part that spins in a circular direction....

Not the rear dial, but I did wear out the top dial, and had it replaced by Canon, so my 60D came back repaired and cleaned. The top dial stopped adjusting anything, just spun and clicked. What is yours doing?

My friends just spins in circles. Free wheels so to speak. Does anyone know what that wheel clicks on? How it is assembled? We were out today and he had just bought his camera used. I'm wondering if something can be loose? Pictures would be good is someone has that wheel removed.....

Don't know what it clicks on. I know that my main dial still clicked but made no contact to change the settings. It cost me about $230.00 to have it fixed, and it came back very clean.

Yep.

If it's unlocked it's not going to do anything, at least if it's like previous thumb wheels.

I agree. I have no problem with him questioning the long term reliability of any part of the camera. After all no one is forcing any one of us to participate in his threads. I do sometimes wonder why he is so concerned about these things. Mechanical devices will fail sooner or later, it's only a matter of time. For his sake I would hope he spends more time enjoying his camera and less time focused on potential failures. But if that makes him happy, who am I to criticize.

Having said that, there are several reported cases of the rear wheel failing as a result of sweat getting into the mechanism. I haven't read of any freewheeling like this one.

What is that? How is the underside of the knob laid out? Does it have teeth that grab on another part? Is it removable? I know the rear cover is sold as one piece, but am wondering if the knob can in fact be removed, possible out back on.

What's the camera model?
I can look and see if there are parts available, ebay etc.
Encoders can be made many different ways, but I see no reason why it would not be replaceable.
Might just be a matter of your skillset.

Just FYI, my 60D was stolen here on the island. It was recovered by the local police 2 months later, but not returned to me until more than 6 months had passed. When I finally got it back, the top dial felt normal, but no longer changed any settings. Canon repaired it on warranty. I never received any explanation as to what might have caused it, or what was actually broken, but I was quite happy with the end result anyway.
