I'm about to purchase an EOS d30 and must decide on the initial lens for it on a constrained budget. Bear in mind, a major activity is taking pictures of my daughter playing basketball in low-lit gyms. I am dealing with both low light and distance issues, as well as the need for an all purpose lens. For low light, the Tokina 28-80 mm/2.8 would seem best, but does not have a lot of range. For range, the Canon 28-105 USM/3.5-4.50 would be pretty good. Will low light make the Canon unworkable in indoor gyms, or can I use it effectively for action photos without flash? Any questions about quality? If I could use it fairly well, I would prefer to have the range. Otherwise, its the Tokina. I would love your thoughts. Thanks.
