I know there's been threads about it before, and I seem to have got one of the unfortunate 03 serial numbers that clicks when zooming from 70 -> 24. The IQ of my lens seems OK, but I've got a bit of a dilemma....

1) I can keep it and just deal with the clicking noise. It would be nice to know if that clicking becomes detrimental to the functionality of a lens overtime? If it won't turn into an issue in the long run, then maybe I really don't care. Of course it sucks to have paid $2K for a lens that isn't pristine.

2) Send it back to B&H and exchange it for another. I'm still within the 30 days so I can definitely do this. However I find it a bit grating as a consumer of a $2K lens that I'm playing luck of the draw from others' MTF test rejects (i.e. people will buy multiple copies, send back the duffers, or keep exchanging them until they are happy with one).

What would you do?

I think I read about a Canon recall of this lens. Perhaps on Lensrentals.com? I believe a supplier provided a sub-standard part that got into production. I'll try to find the article.

Well, I found what I was thinking of. Not sure it addresses your problem.

Yup, I've seen that article before, I think it was linked from a dpreview thread on this same topic. I don't recall hearing about a recall though...

Anyway, I probably will send it back, I'm just irritated about now having to play this game (send it back, hope for a good one, etc etc)

Yeah, for that kind of money, I'd expect some QC before the thing gets out the door.
