They're small patches of skin that, during the breeding season, change from dull pink to dark scarlet, and their display is part of the birds' complex courtship ceremony.

Thanks for the explanation Pippan. When I saw that as I downloaded the image my immediate thought was retracted landing gear. Cant help being an aviation guy. And then I did wonder what that was. A bone was what I thought but didn’t know.

Killer shots,,,,,, I love that first shot of the Eastern Spinebill on Kangaroo paws. Is that a native plant out there?

Congrats, and thanks for posting.

Thank you. They are native to Western Australia, but grow well in most areas of Australia (except my garden apparently. Never had success with them). This photo was taken at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra, and they have huge stands of them.

thanks j, they’re not often seen as they’re tiny and flit about a lot. But this one was quite obliging in his poses for 30 seconds or so. His Mrs was around too but I couldn’t get a good shot of her. Hopefully they’re nesting somewhere around there.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Those mainland magpies are mean looking characters.
I'll have to take a closer look at ours. Don't remember seeing such a look in their eyes.
We've currently about 8 squabbling outside amongst the juniors.

You're in a different part of the world now Neal.
It was immediately obvious from the change in birdlife a while back :-)

They do have a mean look, and also behaviour. this one chased away pigeons and Galahs on this park around it!

It’s good to be back home Richard after 2 years! Looking forward to getting away to some birding spots all about an hour plus drive. Just got to get through all the out standing handyman jobs accumulated! A plumber charged the wife $200 to replace a pair of faucets which only required a gasket replacement of which I had stock in the toolbox! Some things couldn’t be left till I came.

You've got plenty to look forward to.

There's tradies and tradies

In my work I'm very aware when wives are on their own at complete mercy of all and sundry to help them get what they need and not what some would want to inflict and send the bill! Best not get me going on that! :p
