And now for something upbeat.

Powerful owl chicks, still in the hollow, a few days before fledging.
Bigger chick is about 4 days older and fledged the following day.
I have never seen any competition between chicks but affection like this is common.

Dave I missed this.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Love the way you grouped them together.
Beautifully photographed.

Looks like mum is reading junior a bedtime storey (middle photo) and then junior nods off to sleep (right photo) :-P

That's 2 chicks. Bigger chick, on the right, gives the smaller chick a little nibble, then smaller chick, unable to move as it's such a tight squeeze in there, gives big chick a little nibble on the toes.

It must be so depressing seeing all this go on. When I visit my family in the area I grew up (Yowie Bay/Port Hacking) I often walk along the old creek lines and around the mangroves along the edges of the Hacking River. The amount of rubbish, weeds, fences, pipes spewing foul water, disgusting smells and over-development leaves me shaking my head. That is a big reason I stayed here in the north when opportunity brought me here decades ago. And councils and their pathetic, two-bit, wannabe politicians don't have much power here.:-)

Sutherland council is so much better than ours. They are trying to get our council to go halves in two Osprey poles.
Sutho council has common sense approach to the mountain bike problem.
Some jumps and tracks get sign posted saying illegal track, but will be left due to community interest, with warnings about danger and rubbish being left. If area deemed to be ecologically important, they sign post once fenced off and remediate area.

Sutho council also very helpfull with regards landowner with the crane that Osprey use.

One of the very rare times I took handheld video.
Painted-button quail swaying like a branch in the wind.

Interesting actions.
Curious how you get so close to them.

Quail here are gone in a flurry of whirring wings before you even see them.
