This is one posted in r5 forum a while back but never posted in Australian Birds as far as I could see. Eastern Rosella I was lucky to come across in Melbourne some time back. He flew in and had been sitting quietly to my side only 5 meters away unseen by me until I happened to twist me head and there he was staring at me Not normal for these guys as they dont like getting close to humans or anywhere near eye level as theylike to be high high. .Not only was I extremely lucky on his distance and perspective but it was also overcast with nothing behind him to distract. Like all my christmas's had come at once on this shot ! Just wish I could score a Northern Rosella like this but to date no go (:

I'm not sure what the differences mean? Male ? Female? Or is todays all grey a juvenile?

Spectacular!!!

4th straight frost in a row and the wrens were taking advantage of the early morning sun and soaking up every bit of warmth they could grab

this is half an hour before the ones above and in the lee of my sheds
It was quite comical to watch as the hen would stand on one leg then gingerly put the other down to take a step then quickly lift it, shake it and then put it back down again, move on and lift a leg again
I imagine the ground wasn't to its liking
temperature about -3C

but it does not look to me like this duck is whistling at all. His beak is closed!

Is the red on beak blood or colouration?

I cringe when I see raptors eating road kill. Too many get skittled themselves.

Thanks Richard, I think it's blood. You're right about roadkill feeds resulting in roadkilled birds, especially wedgies as they're so heavy and slow to take off. We don't get too much roadkill here but I stop and take it off the road when possible (I think that's why kangaroos and wallabies have tails). Wedgies are rare this far north so it's always a treat to see one of these huge birds.
