.. I changed my mind, think this could be an immature brown goshawk :-)

Ulrike I can't really help but there was a discussion about one of mine that was interesting. Not sure if any of following is helpful

Hi Richard, my vote is for a collared sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus), though they are very similar to brown goshawks. Mostly I'm basing that on the length of its middle toe (appears to be a lot longer than the other two, although it's a bit obscured in the photo). Also appears to have a slight notch in the tail whereas brown goshawks are more rounded. Can you show any other photos?

avondale87 wrote in post #19049216 (external link)
Thanks Pippan
No better ones - it hid in the top of gum which I now read is is antics
I see the Brown Goshawk is said to have a heavier, hooded brow than the Collared Sparrowhawk.
Not sure what to make of the 'brow' on this one
The feathers on its breast look different too.

I put this query last year and I think that bird is different to this one
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1504519
verdict from Rawshorty was The notch in the tail is clear, it is a Collared Sparrowhawk.

I agree with him, but a juvenile whereas your recent visitor is an adult.

From Today. Lucky shot on a branch as they are normally seen eating on Gamba grass that is super hard to get a clear shot through. This guy just landed and stared :)

I agree Ulrike, immature (2nd year) Brown Goshawk. Too much brow, too long a tail and no apparent notch for Collared Sparrowhawk.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

today was 'wren day'. At first after heavy rain there wasn't a bird in sight, then they appeared, and what a treat
They were all over the place and in the mood to be photographed.

The lad getting his colours just plonked himself down in front of me and showed himself off
This is straight out of the camera with just a tad noise reduction. Not sure why I even did that

Practising with, and still getting used to, the new R7 and RF100-400. These Rainbow Bee-eaters are fast and erratic flyers, hunting dragonflies and other insects over the water at Wangi Falls in Litchfield National Park. Eye AF's an amazing thing but only if you're fast enough to keep them in the frame!

They are wonderful to have about.

Very nice Rainbow Bee-eaters. I like the way light coming through extended wings

thanks Charles.....I must admit though it couldnt have been done without the R5's Animal Eye AF . This has had a massive effect on my keepers as compared to the Canon DSLR's I previously shot with.

Probably the best example of this is a Bat colony at the back of my place in Melbourne I was shooting in attempt to get one of the bats skimming the river water on a hot day in order to get cool.

Over 12 months period using a 5DSR and 400mm f2.8 MK2 and 100-400mm f4-5.6mm I ended up with maybe 5 shots that captured what I was after . That is sharp, perfectly positioned above the water , eyes in focus and taken at the exact time they touched the water . These 5 shots I ended up with were the net result of taking between 5000-7000 shots of these guys over those previous 12 months.

FYI the main reason for so many failures was my DSLR AF tracking losing subject focus one way or another before they got to the water. Or I got focus but it landed on a wing and eyes were out of focus etc etc . The main issue was the dense bush and tree background throwing the tracking off as the bats descended into the river gorge to get on to the water which was an af issue ( distracting background) that all DSLR cameras had a problem with regardless of brand.

Anyway after changing to the mirrorless R5 a week after purchase I revisted the same spot I had been visiting for the previous 12 months and found the bats skimming water because of the heat. I had set new r5 to eye af tracking etc and frame rate to electronic 20FPS and started shooting. Within 30 seconds I had more keepers of Bats in flight skimming water than I had for the whole 12 months 7k plus of shots with my previous 5DSR body and lens combo!!. I was speechless it was that amazingly good. And thats been the case ever since .

FYI I dont mind sharing the above as it maybe of help to others if they are wondering what helps get good BIF :) :)

BTW If you interested the shot Im referring to is here .https://flic.kr/p/2kvzqbw (external link) This was taken with a EOS 5DSR and ef400mm f2.8 Mk2

Cheers

That is really good news to hear about the R5!! Thank you Clipper!!

Thanks Ulrike, I'm going to keep practising on them to get better shots and more used to the R7.

Forest Kingfisher - Fogg Dam. This is probably the best portrait style shot of a forest kingfisher that Ive been able to capture so far mostly due to a really good bright but slightly overcast lighting/day when I got the shot . Nice diffused light certainly helps the colors to pop not to mention the great detail when there is less shadow to deal with in lightroom
