A Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, a large white parrot of Australia. It has a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. The female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). These can be quite noisy and conspicuous birds with loud, raucous calls, both at rest and in flight.:-)

I spotted this one on the ground at Oxley Creek Common, munching on Scotch thistle. The Seeds of Scotch thistle are 4 to 5mm long, grey with dark mottling and are attached to a pappus (parachute) of toothed hairs or bristles up to twice as long as the seed.

She seemed to be enjoying herself.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

Female Shining flycatcher -

Dennis and Clipper your shots are absolutely beautiful - all of them. I really must get myself an RF 600/f4. Oh I forgot, I need to book one of Pippan’s tours.:-)

Please do, Ray! In fact, if you book about 60 of our tours, I might be able to afford one.:-D

Tipping from side to side doesn't count.

A striking set of contrasts. Is the blue shoulder patch iridescent, or did it just happen to come out looking that way?

It really is iridescent, and often the first thing you see that alerts you that the bird is there in dark forest.:)

Pacific Emerald Dove (external link) at Berry Springs. I've been trying to get a photo of one for ages and he posed so nicely for me but was in a fairly dark area, so very high ISO for the R7 (and too fast a shutter speed with no time to change it before he flew off).

Amazing colours. When I looked at it my thoughts were fluorescent.

The Masked Lapwing is sometimes referred to as the Spur-winged Plover because each of its wings is armed with a yellow spur at the ‘elbow’ (or carpal joint). Indigenous people used to say that the birds were carrying yellow spears. Lapwings use these spurs when diving at potential predators or intruders during breeding season, while chicks are running around or when the eggs are just about to hatch.

While these attacks are quite unnerving, the birds seldom actually strike their ‘victims’, preferring a close approach to scare them away.

This protective Adult was just content in warning me with a call, not to come any closer to its nearby chick.:-)

Cheers

Dennis
