Great shots, Dennis. I can’t even dream of these in my neck of the woods posing for a picture.:-)

Thanks Ray, the Kingfishers required much backward contortion as they were what seemed 1,000ft up in the trees and I almost fell over backwards.

For the Finches, a group of walkers passed by and engaged me in conversation, seemingly oblivious to the fact that was trying trying to grab some images of these small birds hopping around in the undergrowth.

The travails and troubles of the photographer eh.:-)

Thanks Richard. Yes that's the first one they've caught. Got funding to track 12 I think.
They have a FB page and website fro anyone interested. Tracking Australian Painted Snipe

Male and Female Australian Painted Snipe. The rarest waterbird we have in Australia. With an estimated population of just 300 they are also listed as endangered. Currently the location of just 5 birds is know. 1 in NSW, 2 in Vic and 2 in Qld. No one knows where they come from or where they go.

Beautiful colours, Pippan. Did you lighten the background in PS?
Sorry a bit slow sending this compliment but whilst trying to work out the scientific name I forgot to hit the send button.:-)

Thanks Ray, actually the whole image was lightened a fair bit, it was quite late in the day and dark, so was very underexposed.

Bit of a story about that scientific name. The German naturalist who originally named it had been misled by a Frenchman and thought the specimen he'd been given had come from the Molluccas, hence the species name. It had actually come from a batch that had been collected at Botany Bay (where Lt James Cook landed in the late 18th Century). And due to the rules of binomial classification, the name had to be retained.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.
