This Kookaburra character took the liberty of perching atop my telescope when I was waiting for the clouds to clear, to take photos of the Sun using a professional, specialised solar filter to prevent blindness or melting the sensor.

Cheers

Dennis

Nice picture, interesting looking bird. I hope it didn’t leave a little deposit on your telescope :-)
Don’t think l’ve seen many pictures of Kookaburras posted.

Well, here is one. We had a bushfire across the road from our property and this one must have had a brush with the flames - see the brown/scorched feathers on top.
That was now over six weeks ago - I think - as this bird is part of a family that lives in our backyard - he is getting over it.

Here we have the (300mm F2.8L Mk II) + (Extension Tube EF-25 II 25mm) + (EF 1.4x III Extender) taken in the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, where these birds are quite used to people.

Although the eye detail on the Bush Thick Knee bird is not quite macro quality, it remains very good.

Cheers

Dennis

Nice sharp pictures Denis.
You say (300mm F2.8L Mk II) + (Extension Tube EF-25 II 25mm) + (EF 1.4x III Extender)
Errr, would that extension tube give greater reach or were you just so close to the bird?
I think I have tried this but can’t remember the outcome - I will experiment again tomorrow-?

Hi Ray

I had been using the 25mm Canon Extension Tube to photograph some bees on a water lily, allowing me to get a little closer, so it was on-camera when I noticed the bird close by in the bushes.

I think the closest focus distance of the bare lens is 2000mm (78.7") which I understand makes it 1:0.18X magnification.

When I fit the 25mm Tube, I understand that at min focus, you get 1:0.28X (0.28X magnification).

I'm not sure if I was at the min focus distance, but certainly the Tube should have increased the magnification over the lens with 1.4X TC.

Cheers

Dennis

Yellow Wattlebird ~ Anthochaera paradoxa
Endemic to Tasmania
These and Little Wattlebirds were chasing each other all over the place today and throw in a Grey Shrikethrush ~ Colluricincla harmonica and there was a lot of activity.
All the while Magpies were calling in the top of a gum. The sounds of birds was amazing plus the furious activity of these lot.
(wish I could upload a sound file)

Hey Henk, This bird is not burnt it is a juvenile bird hence the plumage. Notice the mostly black lower mandible, this will become cream colour when it becomes an adult. Also you will notice it does not laugh yet, just gives a raspy begging call.

I prefer to be in the bush with the animals than a crowded city.

Thanks Shorty. Yes, we also thought he lost his voice because of the smoke, as he sounded really funny. BTW although the bus fire was not really very serious it was still scary to have so close to home. Photos in this album on Flickr: https://flickr.com …/albums/72157712610156901 (external link)

No worries. It sure would be, fires are unpredictable so even if it does not look to bad one minute it can turn for the worst the next.
