Four beautiful photos Dennis
Love them all.
You certainly captured them beautifully in their natural environs.
The Plover certainly is watching and ready.
The chick is so nice :-)
You must have been fairly close.

The light on the Grebe is beautiful. Really nice composition.

Thanks Richard, I appreciate your comments.:-)

With the Plovers, they were on a grassy embankment and I was on a lower path, almost at eye level with them. Even though only my head and shoulders were visible above the stone wall, one of the Plovers dive-bombed me so I took that as a signal to move on.:-)

I'm not sure if Plovers make physical contact like the local Magpies, but it felt awfully close - hopefully good airmanship by the bird.;-)a

The Grebe was at the west side of the lake and I was shooting into a low sun rising in the east, so I used an on-camera flash to try to lift the deep shadows, but without making it look too unnatural - quite challenging lighting conditions and the little blighters don't stay still for very long.

Cheers

Dennis

Dennis if you hadn't said I would not have imagined flash on the Grebe but others familiar with flash may have. The light is really nice.

Plovers. They are fighters. I watched a couple with chicks in Devonport last week on an esplanade reserve. Common place for multiple uses and I daresay locals harras them.
One was wild and got serious with me so I withdrew. I was under a tree and it navigated the low canopy with ease. Never seen that before.
You've certainly shown the plovers anatomical features well.

A couple of very heavily back-lit, into the sun Australasian Grebes.

On-camera Speedlite used to push some light into the heavy shadows.

Thank you for that observation, I appreciate it.:-)

I have a 3840x2160 display and when I browse the originals in LR or PS, they look as expected at their native resolution, but when I browse the uploaded files on POTN, they look a little soft. It might be that my web browser (Opera) is up-sampling them to stretch across the 3840x2160 screen, which affects the image quality?

Cheers

Dennis

Dennis I find some of the images detail and sharpness differs from seeing it on the iPad, laptop or desktop. My desktop is very unforgiving in terms of IQ being a 27-inch (5120 x 2880) 5K Retina display. Your Manikins when compared are ever so slightly softer on the edges compared to Clifty's crested Hawk. This could be due to how close or cropped the images are, I've read of calibrating monitors etc for proper editing color composition rendering etc, a bit OTT for me. I do all my post work on the desk top. I can't say I see a difference between images after uploading to Flickr or on POTN. I must warn you though I don't have a photography critical eye and would hardly be able to tell about color differences, defects etc.
If you click the little eye glass + on the right top of the image on POTN it takes you to the host site doesn't it? Do you see a difference there?
I'm really not qualified enough to give you a definitive educated answer to your question.
