Looking to buy a new tripod (high end) Gitzo GIGT3542LS or Really Right Stuff TVC-34L both would have matching leveling base. This would be for use with my 500mm f4. Reviews with Really Right Stuff are stellar compared to Gitzo. I know there are a lot of Gitzo users here, are there any Really Right Stuff users that can offer an opinion?

I have experience with both and in my opinion, the RRS TVC-34L with a RRS Leveling Base is superior. It is a more robust product and the RRS Leveling Base is very, very nice.

RRS = Mercedez
Gitzo = BMW

at least that's how I read it. Getting my first gitzo today, cant wait.

One other quick question: Does RRS only sell direct and not through camera stores?

Only direct. I have the same set-up you mentioned. It's a joy to use. I chose the leveling base with the hook attached.

I couldn't be happier. Everything is sooooooooooo smooth.

so do you just hang something on the hook for a quick level?

Usually it's just to hang stuff off of for added weight or convenience. However, I've never thought about the idea of using it as a self-leveler...at any rate...the bubble works great and is fast to use when it comes to leveling.

RRS has got to be pretty good to beat out the 3 series.

I do have several plumb bobs but no. I use the hook to hang extra weight on the tripod in windy conditions.

Then you'll get a kick out of the salespeople in the Really Right Stuff booth at trade shows. If you ask, and sometimes even when you don't, they will hang from the tripods - full on grown men pointing their khakis in the air.

Seeing as you asked, I am very happy with my RRS TVC-34L and BH-55LR ballhead combo.

Very stout, and I could definitely see the difference in harmonics compared to my Manfrotto when shooting the moon.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'll be going with the TVC-34L for sure.
