Bought Anothe L lens

Enjoy your new lens! I've used the 24-105 as my "general" lens on my 7D for about a year now, and it does a great job for pretty much everything: people, groups, action, travel, portraits, studio, whatever. I'm one of the people who always found the 17-55 range to be too short. Having tried the 24-105, I'd be very reluctant to go back to having only 55 mm as the longest length on my general lens. I guess it all depends on your shooting style and interests; I don't have much interest in landscape or architecture photography, and for the odd occasion where I need a wider angle, I have my Tokina 12-24 (which gets used about once a year). And for the record, I don't have plans to buy a full frame camera any time soon.

One of the great benefits of the 24-105 is that it offers a one-lens solution for many situations. It's long enough and wide enough to be very useful.

Well, thanks to those of you who just love to rain on a parade.
I guess none of you have ever purchased a lens just because you wanted it or thought it was what you needed.
I'm sure the 24-105 and I will make out just fine in the long term.

I'm sorry if you felt I rained on your parade. It was done in the spirit of hoping you might see that you spent $700 on a lens you dont need in time to get your money back and buy something that will actually improve your photography. But I guess you wanted kudos for hitting the purchase button.

That was my thinking as far as the 17-55.
Great lens and I've used it more than just about any other that I have.

Will you ever go Full frame at any point? Or stay on crop??

i like rugged lenses, and is why I never pulled the trigger on the 17-55/2.8 when I had my 60D. Not needing telephoto, I contemplated hard getting the 16-35/2.8 ii as my walk-around lens in anticipation of going full-frame knowing I'd love it as a UWA once in the FF world.

That said, the 24-105/4 that came with my 6D was an excellent lens. I hated to part with it actually but the moves I made in camera gear saw me sell it and put it toward the 24-70/2.8 ii (the corner to corner sharpness at 24mm is just too damned important to me).

I think it's a fine choice for a crop, especially if you prefer telephoto. Personally I wouldn't give up so much on the wide-end (your widest angle is about 38mm with that lens on a crop).

If f/2.8 isn't important, maybe sell the 17-55 & get the ef-s 10-22mm to fill the UWA? either way it does seem kinda silly to have so much overlap with the 17-55 and 24-105...

I dunno, to each his own. but certainly be happy with your purchase! it is a fantastic lens. i'd sell the 17-55, but thats just me....

I think he was just referring to the shorter FL looking like a snapshot vs being able to get a tighter composition at a longer FL. Agreed anyone can make a humdrum SS even with the best of equipment...

btw meeko, really like your work! street photography is something i really want to get more into. im thinking about a 35/2 to whet my curiosity

Honestly, I'm torn what to say to you. Its a great lens, but on a crop body with your already owning a 17-55 I'm baffled by what you want this lens to do. The gap between your existing lenses is so small that it might as well not exist, and the 24-105 isnt really an upgrade over the EF-S lens. Take the faster lens to the graduations.

I have a 17-50, 24-105 and 70-200 and I get a good balanced use from all of them. One example of why I like the 24-105 is when I am doing studio portrait sessions with my family. Since I am using multiple off camera lights with a background, the f4 to f2.8 loss isn't a problem. I don't like the perspective of only using a 80mm equivalent lens when doing headshots expecially with children who have smaller heads. So without the 24-105, I would have to make the kids wait while I change from the 17-50 to the 70-200. Having the 24-105 lets me go from full body shots of multiple people to tight head shots of one person without having to change lenses.

Outside the studio setting, my 17-50 is my primary indoor lens, but outdoors with the kids running around the yard, 50mm quickly becomes too short. So my 24-105 then becomes my lens of choice for the outdoor stuff. The 70-200/4 IS is often too long for the running around the back yard stuff, but becomes a great outdoor sports lens.
