I'm trying to make a rig and need to connect my magic-arm to my extension arm. they both have male 5/8" spud ends (like the top of a light stand without the 1/4-20 threaded portion. I'm trying to find a female-female connector to attach them end-to-end with a thumbscrew to secure both ends. it should be a simple collar with two screws coming out the side, but I cannot find anything like this.

Does anyone know where to find this piece?

its the thumbscrew thats throwing it off. There are plenty of FtoF couplers.

You can try something like this

Would something like this work?
http://www.amazon.com …F8&qid=1398377441&sr=1-69 (external link)

What exactly are you trying to do?

Yeah, but the thumbscrew makes sure they don't slide apart.

both of those are very expensive options (the latter I'm not sure if it's sturdy enough). The thumbscrews are mainly there to hit the flat-spots on the studs to keep it from torquing itself out of framing.

I'm trying to make a bike rig that will be:

Motorcycle => super clamp => extension pole (two male ends) => female-female adapter => magic arm => camera

I was hoping I could find an aluminum or steel collar made specifically for photo/video work for like $5-10, otherwise I'll just buy a male-female light stand extension pole for $35.

Are you just trying to get the camera high above the bike?

If you're going for a "rig" shot there are other ways to do it. What kind of shot are you trying to achieve?

This is what I'm trying to somewhat emulate:

Here's the BTS image he sent me:

Basically, I have everything I need to do this except for a way to connect my extension boom to my magic arm. He's using a female=>male extension whereas I have a male=>male extension.

Any machine shop should be able to create precisely what you want out of a 1" diameter steel round bar. You'd have them bore a 5/8" ID hole (plus a little more for clearance with your spuds) in each end, then drill and tap holes for the locking bolts at each end.

I'd suggest forgetting the thumbscrews and use bolts that are tightened with a wrench.

I know it's easily made, I was just seeing if anyone knew of a reasonably priced piece that was already a commercial product.

I'm confused, why does your magic arm have a male connection ? Normally the extension boom would end in male, Or people would use a clamp on a thicker pipe. Keep in mind that you want to keep the connection points as simple as possible to avoid risk of failure or wobble.

This is a Female / Female connector that might work for you.

thank you! that's exactly what I need.

btw, all magic arms that I've ever seen have two male ends. the extension rod I'm using has two male ends because it's part of a low-profile light stand (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/290883632477?lpid=82 (external link)) and its legs attach to the pole via a female connector.

Even better, I found a female-male stand extension that I got in a group of other grip gear off of craigslist!
