I have a 500 f4 lens and usually carrying it around with me is not a big deal. The only issue is when I bring it to the zoo, it is very awkward and heavy to carry around. I am pregnant right now and can't see myself really being able to haul it around the way I used to. I want to go to the zoo a bunch over the next couple months before my baby comes...and a couple of the exhibits (baby lions) the 500 f4 is just so great.

I was wondering if anybody knows of anyplace I can buy a mini dolly or something made to attach to big lens cases so I can easily wheel it around with me instead of carrying? Any ideas? Thanks!

How about getting a baby stroller, which you'll be wanting soon enough anyhow, and carrying the lens in that? For outdoors, good-sized wheels are vital.

For indoors, I have a $29.95 Samsonite luggage carrier (external link), but it insists on smooth surfaces.

just thinking outside the box, why not buy a stroller (or use the one you have already)? Camera bag on top and done. My kids are long out of strollers, sometimes I miss the instant shopping cart...

Or one of those collapsible luggage rollers, $20-30 at Target etc. Come in handy later if you travel/fly, I have my gear bag on it and the kid's backpacks too. I have something like http://www.amazon.com …=collapsible+luggage+cart (external link) and it works very well.

(I see Jon beat me to the stroller ;-)a

Have registered for the baby stroller. If we don't get one we will buy it early June with the discount they give you for having it on the registry. Not a bad idea though lol.

$199 just for something with wheels is more than I'm looking to invest right now (with all the baby stuff we are having to buy). I did find a couple foldable mini dolly's on amazon after posting this...so that is definitely an option. You'd think the company that makes these cases would make something like this that you can use with the cases.

A concern about the luggage roller. Smaller cases will tend to slide around and fall between the two uprights. The structure of the case or package it's carrying is what keeps the bungees from pulling the handle down and trying to close. The wheels are quite hard and transfer vibrations to whatever it carries.

I've used the Magna Cart, which is sold in BJ's for around $40. My work computer doesn't want me to browse BJ's, so here's an eBay link instead: http://www.ebay.com …nal-Luggage-/181383460348 (external link)

I know your initial ask was for portability. The problem with carrying gear around in public like this is it's a target for snatch-and-grab thieves. Pardon my being blunt, but chasing a $30 solution to carry a $10k lens strikes me as penny-wise, pound-foolish. I would save up to get a proper camera backpack, roller case or hybrid roller backpack to keep that glass in your hands instead of some thief's. A backpack would be my first choice because nobody is likely to snatch it off your back, but given your pregnancy, something like the Ape Case ACPRO4000 should fit the 500 plus other gear, and give you a choice of rolling it behind you or wearing on your back as desired. And when the baby comes you'll have room in the laptop compartment to carry some clean diapers and bottles for your new child.

Otherwise, I would recommend the stroller solution to keep the lens in front of you and in your sight, rather than a trolley that gets dragged behind you. And find some way to secure the case to the stroller.

The problem with roller bags when outside is many do not have wheels designed for rolling outside on gravel, grass and dirt. The one roller bag I love for this purpose is the Tamrac 698 Big wheel. My 600mm f/4 II fits in this so your 500mm will be fine. Allthough not cheap it has the best heavy duty wheels and stands up to use outside on allot of difference surfaces. I have had mine for over 5 years and it has been everywhere and looks like new. The bag fits allot of gear and has many pockets. It will keep your expensive gear safe too.

For back packs the Gura Gear Bataflae 32L is awesome. You can order straps to properly attach it to a luggage cart securely so no worry of anyone snatching it.

How about something like this http://www.chinatraderonline.com …nd-Reusable-110449589.htm (external link)
It will hide your equipment when not in use, and they are sold all over the place.

This is out of your price range but I figured I'd post a photo to give you some ideas.

Those jogging strollers often show up used at Goodwill or similar places and you might be able to find one at a severely reduced price.

The lens is in a Lightware Z600 case which is fine most of the time. I have 7 weeks left of pregnancy so yes, looking for a cheap solution, don't see the big deal. I hardly see someone "snatch and grabbing" something that heavy...and besides, the second I get to my destination the lens gets mounted on to my tripod and used. I am using it at a zoo not a secluded place as well. Just going off eyesight that Ape Case does not look big enough to fit the Canon 500 f4. Typically my trips out with the 500 f4 are for very specific things either wildlife refuge where I use it from the car with a bean bag...or the zoo where I am typically visiting one exhibit for a few hours. When the kid gets old enough to head to the zoo I'd instead bring my 70-200 which can be much more easily carried while strapped on.

Ended up buying the samsonite luggage roller and seems perfect for what I wanted it for. Got a FONZ invitation for a preview of the baby lion cubs so I will probably head out there next Friday.
