I need a better long lens than the 55-250 and I'd really love the new Tamron 150-600 but thats not going to happen for a few reasons mostly budget and the way I would have to make my purchase. I can make it happen in about a year but I really don't want to have to wait that long. So I have decided to go for either the Sigma 200-500 or the Tamron 200-500. I have seen some great photos from both. I have studied both of these lenses and just plain can't make up my mind. If you were going to purchase one or the other, or already have, which would it be, or why did you choose one over the other.

My camera doesn't take great pictures.....I do!

i'm not quite sure what lens you're talking about when you say sigma 200-500mm...so it's going to be hard to give you advice...exactly how much money are you looking to spend here?

My apoligies, I was in a hurry when I wrote that from work.
I meant the Sigma 150-500 vs the Tamron 200-500. I'm looking at spending $1000.

If your looking at spending $1000 the Tamron 150-600 is about that.

Heya,

The 600mm Tamron is priced right where you want to be. Pre-order it. It's worth the wait. Don't bother with those 500mm zooms. The 600mm Tamron does what they do, plus 100mm, for the same price basically.

Very best,

i'm not sure when you want this lens...but the tamron 150-600mm looks to be sold out in most places...honestly speaking...i don't think the tamron looks to be any better than the 150-500OS that i have...although i still want to rent one to compare...but from the majority of sample shots i've seen haven't tempted me to consider putting in a pre-order...and the 150-500OS should be considerably less than 1,000 if you buy used

i would definitely prefer the 150-500OS over the 200-500mm if those were your only choices

The Tamron 200-500 is manual focus only, if that matters to you; it was a deal killer for me. If you need it now, I'd recommend the Sigma 150-500; it's just a bit less expensive than the Tamzooka, and pretty close to the same quality. If you can wait for the lens, then the Tamzooka is the clear choice.

Gripped 7D, gripped, full-spectrum modfied T1i (500D), SX50HS, A2E film body, Tamzooka (150-600), Tamron 90mm/2.8 VC (ver 2), Tamron 18-270 VC, Canon FD 100 f/4.0 macro, Canon 24-105 f/4L,Canon EF 200 f/2.8LII, Canon 85 f/1.8, Tamron Adaptall 2 90mmf/2.5 Macro, Tokina 11-16, Canon EX-430 flash, Vivitar DF-383 flash, Astro-Tech AT6RC and Celestron NexStar 102 GT telescopes, various other semi-crappy manual lenses and stuff.

The Tamron 200-500? No, it doesn't have AF on Canon or Nikon bodies. A friend of mine had one and got very frustrated trying to shoot birds with MF. She got a BigMOS last year and loves it.

According to the Tamron site it's both. There is a switch to toggle between.

This example of the lens worked well. It's the least expensive new 500mm stabilized lens on the market, and the price has decreased in the last couple of years.
