Got a brand new 1DX today & not much time to play with it, but finally got the battery charged & snapped a few living room shots; very impressed with the lack of noise at high ISO ( 25600!) but man, is it loud when I take the shot! I switched drive mode to Single Silent but it's nowhere near as quiet as the 5D MKIII was in Silent shooting mode. I see this as a potential irritation for guests at weddings ( my field of photography ). Are there any solutions? (Please don't say go back to the MKIII, lol!)

Not much to add on how to dampen the sound, but I've had both the 1DIII and 1DIV and even in an open area like downtown Chicago's Millenium Park, the sound of the shutter on both cameras made people turned heads and notice...can't imagine trying to be discreet at a wedding, even if you are the paid pro :)

The 1DX allows you to adjust the speed of the L (low-speed) rapid shutter. The default is 3/sec, which is quite slow but you can adjust it up to 12, move up to 6/sec and try. But you will still find it louder then a 5D3.

I'll have to find how to do that in the manual, lol! Thanks I'll give it a try!

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for quieting the 1dx. But I am curious.

Is the 1dx an addition to your kit or is it replacing the 5diii? If it is replacing it, I would be interested in your reasons for moving to the 1dx for weddings.

Replaced. It's a long story but my MKIII began giving me problems after only 5 months & after repeated attempts to correct it CPS finally replaced it with a new one. I had a situation where I could sell the new MKIII & a lens & with so e more funds, get the 1DX at about $800 less than retail. I figured if I like it better, great! If I don't, I can sell it as nearly new, with warranty, & make a limitless cash & buy another MKIII. But I also wanted to see if the 1DX would give me high ISO shooting with less noise than the MKIII, which judging from the shots I took tonight at 25600 it def does.

Is this your first 1D body? I used to use 1D4's and 1Dx's at my old publication, but since going self-employed I use the 5D3's. The 1Dx isn't any louder than the other 1D bodies, they just aren't dampened well and have a very strong, metallic-sounding, mirror slap.

I used to shoot the 1D's for weddings and other quite corporate events, without much issue. Just be cautious on when you shoot. Just because you have 12 fps doesn't mean you have to use it.

My favorite feature of the 5D3 is the silent shutter though.

The silent mode on the 1dx is louder than the 5d3. It's very obvious when shooting weddings in a dead silence church. :)

I also switched from a 5D3 to a 1DX, I find the 1DX better in so many ways. That said silent mode does not compare to the 5D3, for my use it's not a concern, since weddings are not my profession. I shot fashion models only where shutter noise is not a concern.
Hope you will enjoy your new 1Dx

Consider a 6D  Seriously though it's the quietest full frame body... It's silent mode is ridiculously quiet and can compare well to a camera that doesn't even have a mirror. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Us20vTIiZLA (external link)
It also is second only to the 1DX for high ISO noise (which is why I kept it after getting a 5D3) so if you can live with just one AF point and a very slow frame rate...

I was going to suggest the same thing for weddings. It is great with high ISO and takes stunning images.

Well, if I decide the 1DX isn't for me I'll certainly look into the 6D! I'm hearing (on another forum) from some colleagues who are Nikon d$ users, & are wedding photogs like myself, that the noise isn't really an issue, just to be selective about when to shoot during the ceremony. You'd think if Canon can put such a great silent feature in the 5D MKIII they could do the same with the MUCH more $$$ 1DX! Thanks for the feedback, though, I appreciate it!

I think it's a case off you can't have everything….if you need/want 10+ffs, 300,000 shutter life…than you need a solidly constructed shutter system. These are the little things we trade off…although shutter noise is rarely mentioned ( albeit important for your settings). I think the 1Dx, being Canon's throw if off a cliff …pick it up and shoot camera, will always be clunkier and "stiffer/louder" than the consumer ends. I also think you may be a bit oversensitive to the sound, after listening to the 5mark3. Shoot a couple weddings and then ask the clients when you present your work if they recalled the camera being loud….given the solidness of your work, I bet they don't. :)

^^^

Right on! The 1D series is built for different aspects in mind. Personally, I like the shutter better than the 5D series, which sounds cheap compared to the 1D. May be I am bias now since I have switched over four years ago....not looking back either.

I actually had people impressed by the shutter sound as it implied "professional" to them...I know better than that as the gears do not make me a better photographer...just better images.

Yep, If you want 10+ fps you've got to put up with a louder camera.
