Hi All

I got my 5D3 a couple of days ago and only just today went out and gave an airing :D

Transferred the files using my reader as usual and what struck me was the file names???

With my 350D, 40D & 7D I have been used to the convention IMG_xxxx or _MG_xxxx depending on whether sRGB or aRGB has been selected. However with the 5D3 the files are named 7V4Axxxx not what I expected at all??? (stating the obvious ;) xxxx is the numerical part)

So why so compared to all the other Canon bodies I have used in the past and as such it something in the setup I have overlooked and FWIW at the moment I set sRGB and all taken in RAW

TIA for the insight :)

mine start with G8A right now. I think you can set a custom thing in the menu. Personally I don't care what the file name is, as long as they don't duplicate. My guess is that once it rolls over 9999 the G8A will change to something else?

Mine are 3EOAXXXX lol. I am not sure why there is a difference, but I do know you can create a custom name for files in the camera.

Mine are IMG_xxxxx
Just as it came and then upgraded to the latest firmware, it stayed the same.
It rolled over the 10,000 and stayed the same, now at 14,000 in total.

Personally don't care what the file name is.

Mine were 3J7Bxxxx straight out of the box and they still are now, and I have rolled around past the 9999 mark quite some time ago. So it doesn't look like they change as you go back to 0000.

I have found the unique identifier useful as in the past I always had to make sure that, when I was using two cameras, they weren't going to clash when all the images of an event were dumped in the same folder. Easy enough to do, I just reset one camera to zero before the shoot, but don't have to think about it now.

I am another that doesn't care what the file name is, so have never changed it from the default. It is interesting that each camera seems to have its own code though.

Also nteresting that submariner has one that uses the old file naming system of IMG, and not a random letter sequence like other 5D3s. I have never known a 5D3 use that IMG tag before. I am wondering if it may have been played with before he got it and somebody used the custom file names to change it to the old nomenclature.

Yeah, just change it like the link shows from Teamspeed. It's one of the things I did the first day and I love it. It helps when I submit images with other people; I can easily see which are mine just by file name alone.

I've got 2 5d3's, and I name the files differently per body so I can copy all files into a single directory for renaming by shooting time+sequence number. Since the names will never overlap I don't have to worry about sequence numbers between cams

Page 154 of the manual states...

The file name has four alphanumeric characters followed by a four-digit image number (p. 156) and extension. The first four alphanumeric characters are set upon factory shipment and unique to camera. However, you can change them.

Mine is IMG_xxxx, it's interesting that the manual states 4 alphanumeric characters as that would indicate my camera is functioning incorrectly. Regardless, my Lightroom import preset renames images to my custom filename convention so the camera filename is irrelevant anyway.

I am also new to D5 Mkiii and it is what I found about file numbering:
You have three choices for file numbering
– preset – can’t be edited – my is 1P1A
– two user’s choices – can be edited.
I like to have unique prefix for particular camera – otherwise I had problem with double numbering.
Now if you change camera settings to RGB – what I use – preset prefix changed to _P1A (first is underscore).
If you use Canon Utility software to transfer images from camera to computer – you have choice to change file names – for example – IMG001.
So if you can see – here is a lot of options to fulfill your needs.
I hope it helps.

Well last time I checked IMG_ was four Alphanumeric characters. So it's just the unique to each camera body part that is different. Has the default always been the same for the 5DIII or has it maybe changed since the camera was introduced?

The underscore is counted as a character, so IMG_ is indeed 4 characters.

well, strictly speaking, IMG_ is not four alphanumeric characters as an underscore is not alphanumeric (letters and numbers only). But that is not really the point, as IMG_ is the file numbering system used on previous cameras but not the 5D3. Mine is a quite early 5D3 and has the four random characters, and I believe this should be the case on ALL 5D3s.

It is interesting that there are now 2 users in this thread who have the IMG_ file name. Whilst the file name itself wouldn't bother me, I would be interested to know why it was set like that, if it were my camera, as it suggests that it had been changed by someone before I got the camera. I don't see any reason for it other than somebosy wanted the file names to match their older files from previous cameras and used the custom setting to change it.

Can either of you take a look and see if it is set to IMG_ in the preset file name (can't be edited) or if it is in the user choices? If the latter, I would expect that there is a random four alphanumeric character code in the preset one, which is what the camera should have been using when you got it.
