So, I've been looking at the Tamrom 150-600, which looks like a nice lens. And also looking at the Sigma 150-500 (I've been impressed with Sigmas new lenses, I know this one is a tad older) along with the 100-400L (I've rented before and I know it's a great lens).

I've been looking at something to use for wildlife/bird (not going out and stalking wildlife to get shots), just casual like. I know some will say the 100-400 will be kinda short. I've also not had a chance to try the Tamron for obvious reasons since it seems to be OOS all over right now.

I know this is very much a personal opinion on everything, but what would be your #1 choice out of the three?

Tamron 150-600
Sigma 150-500
Canon 100-400

Thanks.

I had the 150-500, had to stop it down consistently to f8-11 for decent sharpness on my old 7d. I've used the 100-400 and liked it okay, was pretty good at 6.3 for my use. I'm interested in the Tamron, would love to give it a run. For the price, I'd think the Tamron would be the one to check out.

I don't see the 50-500 OS from Sigma on your list? It is sharper than the 150-500. Had both, kept the 50-500.

I thought about the 50-500, but having the Sigma 70-200, didn't want that much overlap. I was looking to see if anyone had the 150-500 for rent, but didn't.

Do like your pics..

I might wait till I can rent the Tamron 150-600.

The 70-200 is a lens for a different use than the 50-500. I dont see a situation where you would keep swapping lenses. The 70-200 would be a portrait/low light lens, the long lens you are looking to buy would be a daylight sports/wildlife lens. Just a thought. Overlap only really matters if you have two lenses that could serve the same purpose.

Sitting at a softball game, and can take pics of the kids playing, but then also zoom out to 50mm and do a quick landscape. Nothing great, but the versatility is nice.

Could of used a longer lens today for a few birds. I'll have to check out the 50-500 on Tuesday. Be a little more saving up for if I went the 50-500 over the 150-500 or the Tamron. I'll prob rent a 50-500 for a week to do some playing around with.

Another question, since the 50-500 is in the same price range as the 100-400L, would I miss those 100mm at the long end?

Heya,

If you want casual shooting, don't want to stalk and get closer and closer, then get the longest lens you can. The 600mm of the Tamron for it's price, cannot be beat currently. And it's a very sharp lens for a 600mm lens at it's cost. You will be pleased with it. I use it hand held and with tripod. I shoot at F8 pretty much all the time. Plenty sharp. And the reach, again, is just unbeatable for a casual shooter.

I mostly shoot sports with the 100-400 and not wildlife but look at the reviews, comparisons, etc.

I've been looking at reviews, side by side, and all that I can. I'm seeing some people say the 50-500 doesn't hit 500 in some situations. I'm just going to end up renting a 50-500 and 150-600 when I can. I've rented the 100-400L, so I know how that one is.

It is called focus breathing and if you focus way out in the distance, it hits 500mm. Several lenses zoomed at their farthest focal length don't full reach that focal length when you focus on subjects "closer" than way off.
