Are you sure that's wide open? There looks to be far too much in focus for 50mm/1.4

Yep, I'm sure. I put the metadata in the B and W section where I also posted the pic so couldn't re post it here but it's definitely f1.4. I often use the lens wide open and find it is centre sharp although it has a noticeable vignette. Easily correctable in pp or leave it for effect if desired.

No, not in this case. This image was achieved by getting the shot right in camera and then enhancing what I took in photoshop. The shot is what I took, I've just accentuated the subjects in comparison to the background which here I've treated as seperate layers. When using such a shallow DoF, the BG blur is more pronounced the closer you get to the subject, as in the shot below, also taken using the same equipt and again at f1.4. This one needed much less work to achieve the finished result but it can be done with most images which have the right composition, regardless of distance, as long as you know how to do it.

So we agree: distance from the subject makes the background blur more or less pronounced. f16 at a subject 10cm away is far different from f16 across a lake. Nice shot though!

I didn't suggest otherwise, however I was talking about the image of the railwaymen which I posted, the effect was achieved more through processing than simply DoF.
