Not legal to take pictures of a building?

I'm from Sweden, so not sure about your laws etc. (Even though I've been to the States several times and love it...)

Now 2 weeks ago I was for a layover in Atlanta, Georgia.
Since I love CocaCola I wanted a picture of med outside their HQ drinking a Coke
(Yepp, cheesy )

When we stopped to do this, one of the guards came out and told me that we were not allowed to take any pictures of the buildings, and that the guards watching the cameras inside would call the cops...

Well, we had alredy gotten the pictures so we said "Thank you" and left.


But my question is: Can a pricate company like Coca Cola forbid people taking pictures of their buildings in America?

If you are on public property, they cannot stop you from taking photos.

That doesn't mean they won't threaten you and call the cops. And that doesn't mean the cops will actually follow the law.

Time to switch to Mtn. Dew. They can ask you to stop if you are on their property, but you can take any picture you want from the public street. You can also ask to see that guard's supervisor to see what the problem is. Some people take their jobs too seriously.

Ok, kind of what I figured.
It's pretty similar here in Sweden.

Basicly we can take photos of anything, as long as we are on public property. Some exceptions though, like some military bases/objects etc.


Well, since we had gotten the pics we wanted we were happy and left without any trouble

Hmmm...Atlanta and Coke. They probably have enough pull in that city to have a black hood tossed over your head and get you whisked off to one of the CIA offshore prisons.

Yep they can't on a public property...at least hassle you to death but it's not worth fighting over for either. It's like shooting or videotaping your neighbor from your own property. Not much anyone can do; but of course I'm sure it varies by state.

Apparently if you have a camera, they want to think you're some terrorist doing something evil :\

Is the Coca Cola company a major terrorist target?
Do the Taliban and al-Qaeda have Coke on their "products of Satan" lists?
Or is the Coca Cola company merely paranoid?

An area where you could have difficulty is, if the Coca Cola logo appears in the photos. That is copyrighted as far as I'm aware.

Maybe they think you camera can see thru walls and record the secret formula. Not that any
firt year chem student shouldn't be able to figure it out. But you also assume that it was a real
Cola facility. Maybe it was a secret NSA facility posing as one Or is that Hydra

That's definitely a "concern" -- brand names are definitely copyrighted, as are "identifiable" buildings, but that's so they won't be used "commercially", it doesn't prevent "amateur" photographers (in most "civilized" countries) from getting shots of, say, a Coke "symbol" from public property, as far as I'm aware of...just don't use it any any commercial application!

That's it, next time I'm in Atlanta I'm going to have my wife take a picture of me drinking a Pepsi in front of that building.
