In order to be any help it would be good to know what you intend to shoot? If its events or weddings the 24-70 is the lens to have. For portraits the 85 is hard to beat. You already have a good lens in the walkaround range (24-105) so you cant go wrong with either choice.

i do events/parties but if im honest, most of it is with flash and my 24-105 is great and i have no complaints with it. though it would be nice to have the 24-70 on one body and the 70-200 on the other. But i dont need it, more of a would be nice to upgrade.

i also do portraits but more for fun, not money. As a hobby, i really want to try the 85mm !!!!!

if it were my money for events/parties, it'd be the 85L in a heartbeat.

indoor portraits, the 85 is just jaw dropping.

5D3 & 6D are incredible in low light. My 6D & 24-105L combo can survive in most indoor situations, even without a flash if needed. I also have an 85L v1 and would never trade it for the 24-70 2.8 v2.

I have the 24-105 for Canon and the 28-70 f2.8 for Nikon. If I had to choose between the 24-70 f2.8 and 85l to pair with your 5d miii it would be the 85l easily. That combo is just awesome together.

I'd suggest the 85L will actually offer you something new. The 24-70II may not actually be much of an upgrade over your 24-105. If you search you'll find a few recent comparisons between it and the 24-105 that have revealed only very slight differences in real-world shooting.

why not get an 85 f1.8, the 24 -70 II and then the rest on a nice tripod or roll the rest into a different lens and sell the 24 - 105?

If it it a pure choice between these two lenses:
Prime over zoom any day. f1.2 over f2.8 hands down.
Only choose the zoom is the issue is indoor working distance, but your purchase should be what FL you need.

To me, these lenses are not comparable at all. Comparing Apples to Oranges.
Both are tools that have very different purposes.

You already own lots of good gear way more than I like to even carry. If I were you I would take that money on a vacation.

I have both. The 24-70 II is the most useful focal length range for my use, but if you want something specifically for portrait, the 85 1.2 II is something magical.
The only lens that is near this for portrait is the Zeiss 135 f2, which I have on order.
I hear the canon 135 f2 is at least 95% as good with autofocus.

So if I were to choose between the 24-70 II and the 85 1.2 II for portrait, I would choose the 85 II
