The new version
QUOTED IMAGE

Does this light have the same dimensions as the previous unit? Maybe its the angle but it seems smaller.

Oh, and thank you so much for your efforts in this.

No its the same size as the Version II
This is Version 3 it took a long time to get it pass Edwards standards, but he didn't want the defects that were in V1 and V2

Is there a picture of the back of the light, controls etc?

Has anyone done a comparison to the Adorama Rovelight CL600?

I have both but mine is the Jinbei not the Adorama which it the same thing
RL has build in HSS the CL dont but I can shoot HSS with it
RL just set up on a stand and your ready to go CL you have to plug the pack into the head
The trigger on the RL is kinda clunky and CL is a lot better build plus you can see the power setting on the cl trigger.
RL can go to lower power settings the cl only goes to 1/32
RL is a monoblock CL is a pack and head system
RL all the weight is on the head of the stand CL all the weight is in the pack giving a lower center of gravity

If the RL drops and breaks you have to wait to get it fixed. If the CL drops your just looking at a flash tube

I let the wind push over a 13 foot stand with both units on the end with a 4 foot octa and they both ended up with not breaks or damages. The octa took the blow of the fall just to be clear.

Its your choice on which unit best fits your needs.

  • Does anyone have any idea what Godox are going to call the new unit outside the USA? Always assuming that they don't do the usual obfuscation and just slide it into the market as an RS-600P variant ( RS-600P Ex Spurt?? :-P )
  • Is the power adjustment á la QT600 (5.0 to 10 in 0.1 increments) or á la CL/AD-360 (1/128 to 1/1 in 0.3 f/stop stages)?
Don't actually need yet another flash (7 battery ones,11 mains powered at present) but I might just indulge myself purely for the heck of it.

Perhaps slightly strange, but to answer my own questions  (ostensibly for the benefit of anyone else outside Cheetahstand sphere of operations (aka everywhere bar lower 48 US States):

  • The rest of the world call this the Godox RS600P Expert - yes, mine IS the version with the 15 minute LED modelling light, the fan (when LED is ON) and the non-Elinchrom offending clasps.
  • Slightly confusing - the power settings run 1/1 down to 1/32 in 1/3 increments on the power pack. HOWEVER, (and this might be me, only got the unit this afternoon), the transmitter still shows 1/1 to 1/128 range. Below 1/32 it has no effect on the power pack until you reach 'OFF', which does indeed turn the output off. Hence it seems possible to have the transmitter showing (say) 1/64 - 0.3 while the actual output is actually set to 1/32. IF this isn't just a doddery old man misreading things, it must be a leftover from the wider range needed for the AD-180/360. As I said, a bit confusing - but you'll have to forgive me as my sole remaining brain cell has been working nearly all day now.
Incidentally, again for those who can't get the benefit of Edward Tang's superlative back-up, I got mine from DZone2-UK (external link). 5 days from ordering through customs inspection/charging to delivery. This supplier just gets faster each time I order from them - and they even have the common sense to send the right mains lead without being asked. Just a quick heads-up for those of us in Canadia, EU, Australia, India, Malaysia et al. Some sellers are still peddling the older versions so be warned about this.

Now all I need are a few pretty girls and a desert
Oh, and a soupçon of skill

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

A alternative for those who don't shoot Elinchrom yes, but very few professionals would buy bunch of godox instead of a profoto or Elinchrom pack.

So certainly not a Quadra killer in terms of the intended market which the Quadra/B2 are aimed towards.

I shot Elinchrom and sold it all after using this pack and I have the profoto. So people are brand geared and all the people I work with and know would never show up using AB either, so each their own. Once you break your gear find out how fast the service is on it and how long you have to wait to get it back.

What gear do you have Paul?

That's the thing with brands like Profoto, you can get it serviced or rent it in most parts of the world. Elinchrom is big in Europe so service is not an issue. Personally i'v built up a good relationship with local retailers over the years so i don't really have to worry about service time as i either get loaners or can rent.

I own and use a lot of Elinchrom on a daily basis, in the bigger rental studios i work in i occasionally shoot with their profoto packs.

My point is that professionals choose name brands like profoto, broncolor and Elinchrom for their ecosystem and service. Saving on the initial cost of acquiring the gear is irrelevant for most in comparison to durability, service, compatibility.

In addition the ELB 400 is yet another animal and is showing where Elincchrom is headed along with their ELC HD PRO compacts.
