I know the 20D can save these two file at the same time but can the Rebel? If so, how much memory does this each picture take up? What size of memory do you need and aprox. how many pictures will they hold? (RAW and JEPG) and (JEPG only)

The XT can take raw & jpg at the same time. Not sure about the original digital rebel.

Yes, the Rebel can save RAW + Jpg. In fact, when you save RAW, it always has an embedded jpg. With the hack, you can also choose what size the jpg has to be. Else, I think it saves RAW + Big Jpg.

Not very sure of the file size, but think I get around 150 snaps in RAW + Medium Jpg for a 1GB card. The jpg obviously is the smaller part and its size has very little impact on the number of snaps.

The embedded JPEG in the RAW files of the Digital Rebel (300D) is "medium" size (2048 x 1360 pixels). Use the EOS Viewer Utility software that comes with the camera to extract the JPEGs. The files will average around 7 megabytes. You'll get around 140 shots on a 1 gigabyte CF card.

When set to "RAW" the 300D will only record RAW plus JPEG. The JPEG can't be turned off. With the hack you can change the JPEG size. Setting the size to small, the camera indicates 163 images available on a 1GB card, though I've never tested to see how many can actually be recorded. Suppose the final count will vary, depending on ISO and subject matter.

I was under the impression that the if you did RAW and JPEG, the JPEG had to be set to a lower quality then just saving as JPG. Is that true?

OOB, the settings cannot be altered. Set on RAW, the camera records the raw and medium quality jpeg. There is no other option.

How does the 1D series camera record RAW and JPG files? Are they saved on the card as two separate files or is the JPG file stored in the Raw file like the 300D and must be extracted later?

Jon.

Unless you are using the Wasia or UnDutchables hacks.
Then RAW + anything is in the custom functions (#8 I think).
With UnDutchables you can also use RAW in the basic camera modes.
