This was a good day for me today. I was setting on my porch watching my bird feeder looking for photo opportunities. Suddenly I saw a very large bird the size of a crow flying from the woods next to my yard and land in an oak tree 70 ft. away from my seat.
Now it was late in the evening so I had already taken my 2x TC III off of my 70-200 2.8. I had the ISO at 800, f2.8. These photos aren't as sharp as this lens will do because they are highly cropped, but you work with what you have.

EDIT: I spelled "Pileated" wrong in the title.

Dano_nav, Thanks.
As far as the spelling goes, I got it from this website:

Very nice Joel!

Thanks you. This bird made me wish I had already received my Tamron 150-600 (on back order), but it was probably too late in the evening for it anyway.

In my books, any shot of a Pileated Woodpecker is a good shot.
Superb captures, Joel!

Cornell is the source for all knowledge about birds...check it again for the spelling.

I see where I went wrong. When you spelled it in your first post my brain did not focus on the first "i" that you typed, but on the second one (Pilieated)

I spotted that right away, and I didn't notice the first "i" which I did miss the spelling on. Looks like we both spelled it wrong.

It was. I am starting to really get into this birding. I am limited on being able to walk very far (back and hip problems), so that will limit what I am able to do. However, I do have feeders to draw the birds in, and many trees in my yard which is also a great help. Then when the smaller birds come (like doves), the hawks come too. Got a picture of a Cooper hawk the other day.

I say it turned out very well with that combo and distance, grand job! Be careful though this little hobby is an addiction, sounds like you are pretty much hooked, you will never have enough glass, having said that, Welcome to the club!

Thank you. I agree about the glass. I got my 70-200 2.8 for sport like soccer and basketball, then I bought the Canon 2x TC III to make it into a 400mm for birding. Now I have the Tamron 150-600mm on order. Wish I already had it.
When it arrives I will totally check it out, and it if works well I will be selling the 2x TC. I will keep the 70-200 for the reasons I originally bought it.
