Hi folks,

Very odd one. I have the Windows Camera Codec pack for Win 7 64 bit (including last month's update)and never a problem showing thumbnails in Explorer and I even use Windows Photo Gallery to display .cr2 files for a quick view before going to Lightroom. Has worked with every Canon camera I have had including 5D II until my 1DX and "some" of the .cr2's display as if the are super saturated and blacks go green or purple, or even corrupt. Not the thumbnail, just full size . And in Photo Gallery and Photo Viewer. In PS CS6, Lightroom, FastStone, Bridge - all fine. As with any other Canon camera i have tried. And tired multiple CF cards, so not a bad card. And every other app displays fine...

Anyone else have an issue with 1DX files, Windows Codecs and Win 7 64 bit?

I had an issue with the thumbnails on Win 7 / 64 about a year ago - some thumbnails would show the preview, some would just show the default icon. It affected files from the 40D, 50D, 7D, 5D2 and 5D3, so it was not camera specific.

I tried rebuilding the Windows thumbnail files, same issue. Tried putting a folder with some of the affected files on a flash drive, stuck that in the Win 7 / 64 laptop and had the same problem.

In the end, I uninstalled the Camera Codec, rebooted, and reinstalled. That worked...maybe try the uninstall / reinstall for your issue?

Thanks. I did just that last night after posting. And with reboots in between and nop luck. All the 5D files, G12 files are fine. Just most of the 1DX files. I have to think its a Microsoft issue. Just surrised I can't find a mention of it online. Unless 1D users never use the Microsoft codecs.

Let me post a sample just for grins. Will take a little bit.

OK, screenshots of the jpg and the cr2.

Some worse than this but its a quick shot to show the issue.

Hmm, I don't have the 1Dx and I also don't look to the MS software for viewing my Raw files (Lightroom has been fine for me)...

But, you show a jpeg at the top -- was that a jpeg that you converted to using the Adobe software? The ".CR2" you show via the Windows viewer would be viewing the "embedded" jpeg, that is, the one created in-camera using your camera Picture Style settings, and so would be "different" from the jpeg created by, say, Photoshop Camera Raw or Lightroom.

If you want to really assess things, try either using the Canon Raw processing software to compare with the Adobe, or shoot Raw+Jpeg and see the difference! It looks like your camera settings produce higher contrast and saturation, which I'd consider "normal" unless you change your camera Picture Style to either Neutral or Faithful and dial down your Contrast and Saturation settings!

Thanks Tony, but let's not get off track. I already mentioned these files are fine in every other software app and that ALL 5D II and III and G9 and G12's are all fine. And more. So it is not how the jpg was converted or definitely not too much contrast.

For example, here is an image screen shot from the display of the cr2 in Windows Photo Gallery using the Windows Camera Codecs from APril 2014 in the SAME lighting as the previous images. Contrast, nope. Bad codec likely unless a better explanation appears.

I agree, it has to be the codec or some weird color management issue...but that doesn't seem likely if the cr2s from the other cameras show okay...

You mention the Apr 2014 codec update, did this occur right after? or some time after? Any other updates? Software installs? Just looking for a common denominator...

I tried first the previous codecs. I do not remember their date but likely 2013. Once I saw this issue, I looked for and found the April update. Both sets have identical results. Every other camera is as expected except the 1DX. And you can see how varied the results can be.

The embedded jpg is fine. I extract with IJFR for these. And fine in every other application. Even DPP.

I posted on the Microsoft forums as well, but I will doubt I will get a response there and can't find a way to actually contact the codec development team.

I was hoping another 1DX user had the same experience so I would feel sure it is the codec. Now I still have the possibility it is my computer.

UPDATE:

Tired everything including my work laptop and no change. Uninstalled the Microsoft Codecs, installed the FastPcture Viewer Trial Codecs and works like a charm. Bought 'em.

Must be a Microsoft issue.
