As Max98 has noted, you were using digital zoom in that photo and explains the loss of quality. Many people disable that feature on their cameras since digitally zooming merely magnifies the image by inserting pixels (sort of). For example, look at any image on your computer and then zoom in more and more using your image editing program (or browser zooming function etc.) and you will see the quality decrease as the image grows bigger and bigger on the screen - that's "digital zoom". so to make sure my dumb butt understands if you use digital zoom you get distortion and noise. So how in the world would you zoom a G15 without using the digital zoom? Smugmug is great been using it for years. Thanks for the help.

Canon used to include a chart showing the digital zoom ranges, as well as explaining the Yellow and Blue range indicators better.

I bought that camera used it came with nothing no manual, no software, no USB cable, nothing but a battery and charger. I'm so use to shooting my SLR getting use to PS is different.

You are just basically cropping the sensor in-camera with digital zoom, so most recommend shooting max optical zoom plus RAW, and then crop in your photo editing software on your computer. I've taken some good Jpeg digital zoom results, but it helps to have good lighting. This is from using my G9 with a 2.0x tele lens at max zoom, plus 2.0x digital tele zoom = 840 mm equivalent (210 mm x 2 x 2), Dennis

Turn on your G15 and set it in AUTO. Now use the zoom lever and you will see the lens moving back and forth, optically changing the focal length - i.e. optically zooming, and on the LCD screen you will see the white line at the top (zoom indicator) moving back and forth.

Now use the zoom lever and you will see the lens moving back and forth, optically changing the focal length - i.e. optically zooming, and on the LCD screen you will see the white line at the top (zoom indicator) moving back and forth. Then if you keep zooming in past the 5x optical zoom limit you will see the zoom indicator change colour to yellow and finally blue but the lens isn't moving. That shows you are digitally zooming past the optical limit up to about 20x and your resulting image will be getting progressively grainier. When in AUTO mode you can disable digital zoom - it's the first option in the shooting menu. Thank you so very much
