I use a hood when it's important to protect the lens but prefer not to unless necessary.

Thanks guys. I've never used one but I'm leaning toward Canon for my 24-105 and 70-200 f4 is.

Those two lenses come with a Canon hood, so you should be all set.

The only lens that I do not use a hood with is the 40mm f/2.8 pancake. One of the main reasons I use this lens is its small size / low profile. Using a hood sort of defeats the purpose. All my other lenses have hoods, and they always get used unless I am using my Lee filters.

Always except my UWA - they are useless, even for protection.

I'm getting pissed off with my 135 hood being so loose though.

The only time I take my hoods off is to use a CPL filter, which I don't do very often. If my lens comes with a hood, I use that. If not, I get a $4 one from Amazon.com or some such place. Ok, now can I say that a 10-22 looks stupid with a hood on it. But, I use it anyway.

This is where a screw in hood is tops. I buy screw on hoods for any lenses I know I'll be using CPL's on, it makes life so much easier.
