Hello, need your suggestion on the following lens options.

First off, just a background on myself. I shoot mostly inter-company events such as parties, sports and outdoor stuff. Personally, I like shooting landscapes, sports and people (portraits/parties). Was going to buy an EFS 17-55 f2.8 some months ago but had some other financial obligations to attend to.

Presently, I only have the 18-55 and 85 f1.8. I have some lenses in consideration and have $2500-3000 I can spend from now this the next year. What would you suggest would be a good combination of lenses? Any other lens suggestions would be most welcome.

I have a 70D and could get a 6D (or its successor) in the future. Thank you in advance.

Tokina 11-16 f2.8
Tokina 12-24 f4

Canon EF 35 f2 IS USM
Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM
Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC USD
Canon 24-105 f4L IS UM

EF 70-200 f4L IS USM

Hi MalVeaux, the 6D won't be part of the $3k. Have 565EX, 2 of them already.

So the $3k is just for lenses?

If you are considering a 6D, don't get any APS-C lenses... Everything else listed are winners...

Sigma 18-35 + Tamron 24-70VC and you're done until you you're ready for longer or a FF body (if you decide to go that route). Add a Tamron 70-200vc later and you're very fast, and fast and stabilized from 18mm-200mm :)

This only makes sense if you will be divesting yourself of an APSc body. I bought a 6D six months ago and have no intention of getting rid of any of my EFS glass: the 10-22 is the best UWA zoom in production, the 15-85 is excellent and has no counterpart EF lens, the 60mm f/2.8 macro gets me more DOF at 1:1 than I could ever hope for with a 100mm macro on the 6D.

Not buying EFS glass just because you own a full frame camera is a bit silly. Sometimes, it is the best option. I had full frame cameras BEFORE I ever bought a crop camera. There are valid uses for each format.

The glass I use on my 6D (35 IS, 100 2, Sigma 70-200 OS) also works quite well on my 60D. I don't see a reason to part with any of it.

OP, I'd pass on the Sigma 17-50 OS. Several better options exist. Tamron 17-50 non-VC, EFS 17-55, Sigma 18-35, and I believe Sigma has an older 17-50 non-OS that is optically superior to the OS version.

@Malveaux - yes, 3k just for the lenses.

If and when I do get a full-frame,I will be retaining the 70D or probably still have another crop body.

What about this?

UWA
EF 35
70-200

Would the 35 be a good general purpose FL on a crop?

@Collegekid - thanks, really don't have plans of ditching APS-C.

Will look at the Tamrom 17-50, Sigma 18-35 as well.

Heya,

I use EF 35 F2 IS exclusively on a crop because I find it to be the ideal focal length for 'everything.' I like it even more on a full frame, simply because I like the slightly wide perspective with wide aperture, makes for more interesting photos (I don't care about the distortion and so far, no one has complained either).

Very best,

I'd say the exact same thing about the 35 IS. Wonderful lens on either format.

I agree, those EF-S lenses are great... I mis-read the OP, and thought the 70D was going to be replaced with a 6D...

Yup, it's the same thing I have in mind.

I subscribed to the 35 thread a while back and look forward to your photos.

I know that for sure, I'd still want a crop and FF. If not the 70D, an SL1 sized body. Better still if they can make use the same lenses. Then again you may be right, what I think may not exactly be what will happen.
