So what would you recommend to make the photo not as flat?

Mostly it's about the light. You could use a reflector or a strobe. Or take the picture in a place with better light.

The biggest benefit to my photography was learning off-camera strobes (mostly studio lighting at the time).. And I mostly shoot with available light. The benefit I got was from learning to "make the light happen" --I started paying attention to the light I was seeing when I wasn't using flash.

You can certainly improve things with post processing, too, but that just helps a little. Getting the light right helps a lot.

C&C always welcomed...
On my images, of course, and on my words as well--as long as it's constructive :).

Here are some ideas that might help get you started. Look these over and start experimenting.

Two from a crazy windy shoot last week. Gave up on the classic glamour we were going to shoot and tried to embrace the wild weather.

All natural light, no reflectors and yes, I know they're warm. :-P

Just trying out my new Sigma 85mm 1.4 HSM ART lens with the only model readily available. First impression: What a hefty, well built lens. Balances well on my 5DII though. Razor thin DoF at 1.4. (In the shot below, Walter's left eye is in focus, and his right eye slightly less) Focuses quite quickly.

I've got my eye on this lens; trying to figure out whether to part with my 135L as this focal length is more useful to me. What lenses are you using less of now that you have this baby?

It is still so new to me I haven't developed a pattern yet, but I will say that I was mainly using my 24-105 4.0L for portraits before, and this one will likely take over that chore completely. However, I don't think it will ever replace the 24-105 for just plain walkin around. I can see it taking some time away from my 70-200 though.
