Would 35mm F2 IS be too redundant?

From my gear list, you'll see that I don't really have a terrific prime. The shorty forty and the nifty fifty are solid, but nothing that will blow your socks off.

The 35mm f2 IS has come down in price, and the samples and reviews look really good. Plus after getting an X100s I've starting to really like the 35mm focal length.

That being said, I'm wondering if said X100s with its 35mm equiv FL makes getting a 35mm prime for my 6D a bit redundant?

I'm using my 6D much less after getting the X100s, but (my opinion only) the X100s still comes up short in IQ to the 6D. So I do grab the 6D for "dedicated" photo outtings where I want the best IQ I can muster. So I'm thinking for those situations the 35mm f2 IS might be very good and versatile. But then again, I do have the 40mm already...

You have that ground pretty well covered with the 40, 50, and 24-105. It might be more useful than any of those if it fits your eye, but you probably dont need all 3 plus the 35.

Oh, if I get the 35mm I'll prob sell the 40mm. I got it for its compactness, but rarely use it anymore because if I want compact I just take the X100s.

I'll def keep the nifty-fifty though, just because I won't get much in resale for it, and it was my first lens so it has sentimental value.

Get the 35 2 IS and sell the 40.

Get the 35mm f2 IS and sell your 40. I wouldn't be surprised if you never used your 50 1.8 again either, so sell that too.

maybe go the opposite direciton and pick up a really nice lens for your x100s?

if you hardly use the 6d, why buy more into the system?

I did, it's called the 23mm f/2. Also happens to be the only lens available for the X100s.

I'm following this thread too. I also have a 40 pancake that I don't use much so I've considered a 35 2.0 IS. I've also thought about an x100 but I tend to use my 60D with a 24L to get a sort of 35mm setup.

OP how do you feel about the 6D + 40pancake compared to the Fuji?

Since getting the Fuji, I've taken the position (that might not be too popular with Fuji fans) that the X100s's IQ is not mind-blowing. It's really good, but not much better than what's possible with the latest gen of APS-C sensors from other companies. To put it frankly, I think sheer IQ is closer to my SL1 than my 6D.

Where the X100s REALLY shines is the: (1) Hybrid VF- I like using both the OVF and the EVF; (2) JPEG output - stunning, blows my SL1 out the water, so I don't have to spend much time putting my mediocre post-processing skills to use; and (3) Ergonomics - it's such a fun intuitive camera to use, nothing like just walking around, being able to shoot discreetly one-handed.

These are the main reasons my X100s is my go-to camera, I actually look for excuses to use it. But sheer IQ is not it.

Now, to answer your question, I recently had a chance to take the 6D + 40 AND the X100s to my in-laws for some family shooting. The X100s was great and I could have shot with it mostly, but I still turned to the 6D for the more "important" staged pictures, and this is why: I was indoors, and at high ISOs (prob starting around 1600) the X100s has some aggressive NR (even with it turned down to -2) that manifests in a "waxy" look on skin. I heard the X100 doesn't have that issue though (and I am not clear whether you are looking at the X100 or the X100s). I could shoot RAW to avoid this, but if I'm gonna shoot RAW I'd rather use my 6D, I like the Canon's RAW files better and they are easier to work with in Lightroom imo. Also, I think the 6D is just more "forgiving". Dynamic range seems to be better. For example, I took a shot with the 6D that was horribly backlit, and the main subjects were obscured in shadows. No problem, shot RAW, recovered in LR. My X100s's DR is ok, but doesn't give me that much leeway to fix poor exposures.

Well the good thing about such an inexpensive lens is I can always just buy it again in the future if I miss it.

Just buy it and see what you use.

35 on full frame is the lens to have for general shooting.

I'd sell the fuji and the 40, would keep the 50. IMO 35 f/2 with IS is a great lens because of versatility.

Probably better sensor than 6D as well, but no IS.

I'd go for RX1 before canon SLR just for the size if full frame 7R haven't came out. Now alpha 7 and a summicron or a biogon is less than RX1 and the lens will keep its value.

Yea, even at used prices (around $1700 it seems), I question whether I should drop that kind of coin on another fixed lens camera. It makes me uneasy because if either the lens OR body malfunctions, the whole thing is rendered useless.

That concern has me thinking as much as I love the X100s, I might sell it before a successor comes out (and resale REALLY takes a beating) and get one of Fuji's interchangeable lens models instead, although I will really miss the leaf shutter for street photography.
