I get the impression when you travel overseas you are able to also spend a lot of time in "tourist" mode being able to travel the different countries and taking plenty of photographs!
All your photography is greatly appreciated!
First, thank you for the kind words.
When overseas, I try to arrive a day earlier than I absolutely need to. This allows some buffer in case of airline delays, both the entire flight and luggage, and also allows me to adjust to the new time zone. Most of the time, I arrive in a timely fashion and the best way to adjust is to just be active as normally in the new time. Depending on what I'm doing, things may go particularly well and I don't need the time allotted, which gives me free time. I was once sent to Boston to determine the problems with a system in beta testing. I was at the instrument for 2 minutes and determined someone installed a check-valve backwards. Thirty seconds later, we determined it ran fine after flipping the check valve, giving me two days free. Tradeshows are slightly different because they are more predictable- no reason to pad extra time to have a part sent to me. On rare occasions, airline pricing is such that it is far less expensive for me to stay an extra day.
Most of the time, I wake early and walk around before work. I map out potentially interesting places ahead of time. If I see something interesting, I'll take a snap and move on.
That particular China trip was unique in that I added a week of vacation time to visit with a close friend. I have a similar invitation in Shenzhen, too, when it is safe for travel.
