What are peoples thoughts on the Olympus Stylus 1, I toying with the idea of ditching my DSLR gear for an enthusiast compact. I also looked at the Sony RX10 but the Oly looks a bit more compact.

For a compact it looks great and Olympus nearly always have good Image quality, but you won't have as much control of dof, and it likely won't track as well. Ate these things important. It's often hard to be happy with lower quality equipment if you step down

It's basically an XZ-2 with a longer zoom range and viewfinder. Has a sensor the same size as a Canon G16. It's not bad for daylight photos, but you'll notice a HUGE drop in quality anywhere the light drops.

RX10 has a 1" sensor, which is a big step up and similar to the one in Nikon 1 and Sony RX100, that's why it's bigger and more expensive.

ANother one I would seriously consider if you want to go with a compact is the Canon GX1 Mark 2. It has a sensor like the one in your 7D and a 24-120mm f2-4 zoom lens. Not quite the reach of the RX10 or Stylus 1, but it's like having a faster 15-85 on a DSLR that is only a couple inches thick.

Thanks for the replies I know the IQ will be a drop I just wondering if something smaller may suit me better. G1X mark II looks interesting just a pity it had no EVF.

It's an option, but a bit expensive:

I have a fair amount of Olympus experience and the new E-M10 is a significant step up in sensor size from the Stylus 1 and is also an interchangeable lens model. So if you need something pocketable that can shoot at a reasonably high shutter speed in low light just put a Olympus 17mm f1.8 pancake lens on the E-M10 or a Panasonic 20mm f1.7 pancake or a Panasonic 14mm f2.8 pancake.
