Two sparrows which can sometimes be confused are the American Tree and Chipping. I managed to photograph them both recently in similar poses and I thought it might be interesting to compare them. The tree has a central breast spot, bi-colored bill, and the stripe through the eye is rusty like its cap. The chipping has no spot, a black bill, and a black eye stripe.

Great shots. Any idea why the Chipping Sparrow sometimes has the two-colored bill, like in the photos that I shared recently? Here is the link, https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1376123 I researched it and found others with the same coloration. One has the black beak, while the other did not. I also noticed that the Chipping Sparrow
has lighter colored legs and feet.

Beautiful shots and thank you for the explanation. I have seen the chipping sparrow and was unsure exactly what he was.

Beautiful images of a couple of birds that are tough to get right. You got them both perfectly and I love the compare and contrast.
Unfortunately, I don't think it'll help me as the American Tree Sparrow doesn't appear to like the South :(. One caveat per Sandy's post of a few days ago and my experience with Chipping Sparrows...their beaks are not always black. Sibley hints indirectly that it may be breeding stage related, but I wouldn't bet the bank on that.

Thank you for your nice comments everyone; I appreciate it. I don't know why chippers sometimes have other than a black bill, but then all of us humans aren't colored the same either.
