Canon rebate question. Can they deny it if you paid too little?

So I've been doing some reading on here about the rebate process but I haven't found a specific answer to my question.

I just picked up a 70-200 2.8IS II and want to know if there is a minimum price you have to pay from an authorized retailer to get the rebate.

Can they say "you paid too little for the lens so you don't qualify for the rebate?"

I purchased it from an authorized retailer and I know the rebate process and would follow it but is there a chance they see the purchase price and say it's below retail? Don't get me wrong it was still $$ but can I double dip here and get the rebate too?

I guess I'm asking has anyone here ever heard of canon denying a rebate because they claim the person paid too little for the lens? If so is there a percentage you can use as a rule? Thanks

I guess you'll have to find out. Maybe the discount was massive because technically it was not a new lens. If you want to get other good deals from this dealer, you may not want to let Canon know what you paid for it.

Ok even if it's a massive discount?

Relax--Canon doesn't care what YOU paid for it. They've already made what they want from the retailer you purchased it from. He's taking the hit, not Canon. Now, go get that rebate!!!

There's no rule saying you can't tell us what you paid.
It seems like you really want to.

I got my 70-200LII for €1418,- (shop discount + cashback).
The normal price now is €2099,- so I think I made a great deal on that one.

It's a brand new lens no question, and did you get the rebate?

Ok thanks, if they don't care what I paid then that's good. I know they have been strict with minimum advertised prices ect. I don't want to get anyone in troubke or have it denied and have my box missing the UPC lol

If it was an AD you' should be fine, the only issue you could come up against would be if it's a grey import.

As an example, BHPhoto (an AD) list both US & Imported lenses although only the US ones qualify for the Canon rebate within the US whereas the imports do not.

Personally, I never pay retail & always negotiate, some dealers go deeper than others & Canon have always honoured the rebates.

Thanks, No, it's a US new, not import lens, I'm positive of that. I just don't want to get the retailer in trouble for giving me a deal.

And do they verify with them that I purchased it, or do they just accept the reiciept as proof with no further verification?

I can almost guarantee that canon know exactly which batches of serial numbers go to whichever AD, this allows them to ensure that the correct import/export duties are paid on products & also allows tracking for support etc.

As long as the serials match with the receipt & supplier you'll be fine. The price you paid shouldn't even factor - for you at least.

Manufacturers are really hot on PUBLISHED prices, Adorama for example couldn't advertise a lens at 20% below RRP list price & hope to keep the AD status - this price fixing helps preserve the perceived value of a product in terms of both monetary & brand value.

At the end of the day, you negotiated a price through an AD, have your UPC & receipt for a qualifying rebate - then you're fine!

I suspect you'll be fine.

Last summer, Best Buy dropped the price of the 16-35L the first day of the rebates by $200, apparently thinking it was an "instant rebate" rather than mail in. (Thanks, sharp eyed POTN folks!) I jumped on the Best Buy lens. I was worried Best Buy would kill the order, but they honored their price. I sent in the rebate forms showing the discounted price. It was no problem: I got my gift card in due course.

Glad you had a chance to post what a deal you got. Always wondered why people post threads here asing what Canon does, thinks, etc. Why not call them and ask?

I couldn't care less to brag about a deal I got..if I did I would say how much I paid. I didn't want to ask canon in case it would somehow affect the ad. I don't understand how my question or intentions weren't clear. I don't understand why you're so bothered by my post. I wanted peoples general experiences with the rebate program when not paying exactly full retail.

Canon rebate question. Can they deny it if you paid too little?
