So far I heard - sports, motor sports, kids, concerts, people, flowers, animals, birds. I am interested in the last four - birds, animals, flowers, and maybe people. Not sure how good it is for birds, I think it is not long enough I have a 120-400 for that. People - probably, on the streets, I should try it, as I do not do portraits. But it means carrying an extra lens in addition to my walkaround 15-85. Not sure for landscapes, it looks like it is too long for it.

Any more uses? I think there are a lot of users of the 70-200 here.

I use mine for absolutely nothing. I've had it approx 2 years and probably haven't shot 200 pics with it. It sits in my spare bedroom and hasn't been mounted on my camera since last June/July.
It's too long inside and too short outside. If I go and mount it now, I know I'll be impressed with the images it produces, and from memory the IS is very impressive, but, for me the focal length is useless............ :(

sports: I used a 70-200/2.8 for night soccer on a variety of croppers, to great effect
wildlife: 70-200 is too short for "real" wildlife, but for zoos and larger animals it works
people: an awesome portrait lens, but you don't do portraits
flowers: some versions are reasonable naked but most require a tube; other lenses are better
performances: for stage performances, 70-200/2.8 is very good
landscapes: can be used to great effect for compressed landscapes (buildings, etc)

you should sell it and move on. it's too good of lens to let it rot on a shelf

I don't own a 70-200 myself but i have a 70-210 F4. I personally use it for taking pics of my pets while they are being silly and I can stand further back so they don't startle from the focus motor noise.

The camera is just a tool - it is not responsible for the picture.

This sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a 5D3 where 70mm is much wider. Put the 70-200/2.8 II on the 5D3 and the 100-400 on the 7D...

+1. I use the 70-200 more on my 5DIII than I did on my 40D. Seems more versatile now.

I owned 3 and didn't really like them, replaced them with a single fast 135mm prime. Couldn't be happier.

In short: a 70-200mm lens (especially a 70-200mm f/2.8 unit) has long been used for a wide variety of images. Canon made a series of popular 70-200mm lenses (external link) during the 35mm film manual focus FD mount days, and the concept has never fallen out of fashion with the rise of digital cameras.

It's among the most versatile lenses, and suitable for everything from portraiture to sports and events and photojournalism. As with most photo equipment, the only real limits are those imposed by the photographer's ability vision and experience.

Right now f/4L non-IS for kids sports on the 7D. I get to be in the field and relatively close to most subject so it's a perfect FL :)

I keep meaning to put it up for sale, along with a few others to thin my gear out.

I bought a Fuji X Pro1 instead. Lightweight, super sharp lens great images SOOC.
