I had my 5d3 cleaned professionally last week. today when I went to use it the camera does not AF. there's no lit box or confirmation beep yet in one-shot the camera will fire but the picture of course is not in focus.

of course the shop is saying there's nothing they did that could have caused the problem, but I've never had any problems with this body and it did work when I took it in and now does not work.

I've tried different lenses and batteries and at the shop they even pulled the button battery to reset the camera. still does not AF.

anyhow they will send the 5d3 to canon on Monday and I believe there's a 50/50 I will get stuck with the repair bill.

so what could have happened?

thanks

I am guessing they were a bit over-generous with a cleaning solution. A week seems like enough time to dry out, though. THEY sent it to Canon? THEY, if they value their reputation at all, will be paying the bill. Even if they don't value their reputation, a notice to appear in a small claims court, and all the attendant poor publicity should make them see the light. I don't think you'll have to go that far.

Is it possible they may have changed your AF settings & switched them to back button AF?

Mike -- we checked everything but that is something I thought of too. we restored all the settings to factory. I spent two hours in the service department and the store's main canon guy and i tried everything. something was damaged

hmmm I hadn't thought of that. good one. actually the sensor was cleaned on Thursday so it has only been two days.

funny thing is I've used this camera in all sorts of conditions for the past 15-16 months and i change lenses a million times a day no matter where I am at and I have never seen a single dust speck on any image! but I figured I'd get the camera cleaned because these guys always do a great job and we're headed on a road trip next month and I have a couple of trips lined up afterwards.

also, this is the first time in years that I have been without a second DSLR but I did order a SL1 last week so i'll get it Thursday.

so the lesson here is always have a back-up camera and never get your gear serviced at the last minute

I specifically told them not to **** with any of my settings. once someone set my camera to jpeg and I didn't realize it till several hundred frames later.

well it's all been wiped clean now and ill bet there will be a hefty repair bill as well

It's like when I take my car for an oil change! They move my seat and it takes forever to put it back again!

Sorry to hear of your troubles, I maintain my own gear.
I fear something like this happening if I send it off to someone else.

do you do your own root canals :D? c'mon man this is the biggest store in the south san francisco bay area. I've had many cameras cleaned there over the years.

it was just a routine cleaning but something went wrong and I am trying to get some ideas on what could have gone wrong.

They just put it back to the factory setting....You have to go into custom function and select everything over again

The Canon Service Center does this, and it can throw you off, especially if you are set to back button focus.

But it doesn't sound like this was the case here. In One Shot mode the shutter shouldn't fire if focus is not obtained (and locked). It sounds like something is amiss here...

Ed, the only thing "normal" that might cause this would be if you had your lens set to Manual Focus...but I'd imagine that would be determined by you and/or the shop...
