I am looking for a good value - fairly inexpensive ball head (medium size - 7d with 70 200 2.8) that is either without a clamp or one that has a clamp that can be easily removed. I already have the mother load of a RSS BH55 but my real estate partner (aka wife) is getting into photography and want a decent one but do not want to spend too much. I have heard good things about Sirui but I believe it is not a removable clamp.

I like the clamp from pro media gear and would like to incorporate it.

The Sirui K-40X has an allen screw securing the clamp. Haven't tried to remove it though. Images on the Web show the other K series heads also have an allen screw.

Looking at the pictures, I can't imagine the clamp being permanent. Might be threaded on with some Locktite, but I bet it can be remove with some effort.

Thanks to all for the feedback. See I tried removing a clamp from an old manfrotto ball head and it is still winning and caused me much pain.
I saw a good comparison of ball heads on dpreview and the Sirui did well against some big names and big buck players so that is why I am interested in them. Seems like if I do not like the clamp on the Sirui I can hopefully remove it.
Main take away all my gear for myself and wifey will be swiss driven so that is key.

Out of curiosity, why are you so fond of the Pro Media Gear clamp? The Sirui has an Arca Swiss compatible clamp.

FYI, Precision Camera Works can remove clamps for a fee. I think it was like $30 or so last I heard.

All the Sirui ball heads come with an excellent arca compatible QR clamp AND one plate, yet the clamps are easily removed. (not so with some of my more pricey heads)

I'm a big fan of the Sirui heads as some of the best bargain heads around. I now have three.
Two small ball heads on my tiny and medium size tripod, and their excellent tilt only monopod head.

skyline - I like pro media gear since it is a local company and found their plates/bracket to be top notch - plus I have a bracket in house already...
Thanks for the other good words - I put in an offer for the k-30x on green toe - see if anyone bits if not will order via Amazon in two days.
Love the forum for such great feedback in just a few hrs.
