EOS 350D & 220EX

Just purchased a EOS 350D, love it.

I tried using it with my older Speedlite 220EX but every shot comes out underexposed...unlike the shots I take with the built in flash. From what I've read, the 220EX is compatibale...ios there something I am doing wrong?

What mode are you using for these pictures?

5D | 17-40L | Tammy 28-75 2.8 | 28-135 | 50/1.8 | 85/1.8 | Sony A6000 2-Lens Kit | SEL35 1.8 | EF 50 1.8 on NEX as my 75mm 1.8

I've tried both full auto and Program mode for the camera, the flash is in E-TTL...all the shots are severely underexposesed....agai​n the built in flash seems to work much better.
