i have a 580ex and a sigma ef500 dg as my slave. i'm just wondering, what flash is more compatible as a slave, the ef500 dg or the 420ex? can i still use the 420ex as a slave without those pocket wizards coz with my sigma i can make them my slave as is (no other gadgets to be installed) i asked this question because a friend of mine is offering me a 420ex and some $$$ to to trade with my ef500dg. what do you guys think about this?

thanks in advance

The 420EX works very well as a slave with the 580EX as the master. And I would even go as far as to say that it works even better as a slave than the EF 500 DG would because, after all, the 420EX and the 580EX are both Canons and fully compatible with each other. That can't said that about the Sigma EF 500 DG, though. The caveat is that the 420EX can only work as an ETTL slave. The Sigma can be set up as an optical slave (in addition to ETTL slave) to the 580EX when both are set up in manual mode.

thanks for the reply. one more thing, do i need some special gadgets to put on the 420ex to fire? my experience with the sigma is all i have to do is put on the stand, set the sigma to slave and it's good to go. does that work the same with the 420?

thanks

No, you don't need any other gadget to fire the 420EX. All you do is set the 420EX on the stand that comes with it. Of course, you have to set the 420EX to Slave mode and the 580EX to Master mode. Both flashes will work in ETTL wireless remote configuration.

The Sigma flash has been known to have sync problems, especially with multi-flash setups.
