I currently have a 50D and am considering upgrading to a 70D. It's a sufficient chunk of money, so I'm thinking about it a bit longer than I normally would.

I've read all the reviews, I know all the upgrades/new features. I just wanted the honest thoughts of those who have gone from a similar model and if they would do it again.

The 70D is good if you shoot a lot of video. I believe the 50D you have has MFA, so that feature isn't added.
Given that you already have a couple EF lenses, you could buy a used 6D and gain better ISO performance.
You could sell the 60mm macro and buy a 100mm macro USM easily.
This 6D will also give you a wider FOV on your current 24-105mm lens.
Best of luck on your choices.

Yes, 70D is great upgrade even from 60D, not just because of IQ, but especially for AF system, MFA 2.0, Dual AF pixel for low angle shots, fast burst, etc...

I would definitely agree with InfiniteDivide on picking up a used or refurbished 6D. For the amount that a 70D sells for, you can pick a used 6D for only a few hundred more. The lowest price I have seen for a used 6D was $1300 body only. The 70D is a great camera but geared towards video. If you dont need video, you can pick up a used 7D for around $700 but the 7 has been out since 2009. I would go for the 6D instead and you will have better low light ISO performance than the 70D.

Heya,

What are you wanting to shoot? What are you looking to gain from a body upgrade?

Very best,

This.

Generally speaking, yes the 70D is a good upgrade, but so are numerous other options depending on what you shoot.

I recommend reading this thread, just to be informed about potential issue you may encounter.

Well the 70d should be an omprovement in autofocus but having had the 50d, the af was always great. I do think the 70d is supposedly a minor increase in res and controlling noise over the 60d/7d/550d 18mp sensor. I bought a 550d and 7d after my 50d and thought there was a big difference in image quality over the 50d. That would imply the 70d would in my opinion be a better camera for image quality than your current one

Yes as long as you don't need your pictures to be in focus Focus Problems

OR

Need to be able to bounce a flash with correct exposure. Flash problem

So if in focus pictures and bounce flash are not big deals to you, the 70D is a great choice.

Just buy it someplace that has a very good return policy like B&H, Adorama or Amazon.

Given his lenses, I would go FF.

We upgraded the wife's T1i to a 70D and my 7D to a 5D3. My wife loves the 70D, easy to use, great battery life (T1i had bad battery life) and the auto focus system has been spot on for all her shots. Only use bounce flash (EX-430) once while shooting some cars inside a museum and everything worked fine for my wife.

Suggestions welcome.

Very best,

I shoot all sorts of stuff. I'm currently stationed in Japan, so the "big camera" (as my wife calls it) is going out with us more and more. I'm not having issues with the 50D - it's performed well for me for years, just like my 30D did before it.

I'm not expecting drastically better images or to suddenly turn into a pro.

That doesn't help. It just says "I want to spend some money."

It would help if you could describe what you shoot most often. Or if you could categorize it all, figure out what you're looking to gain in difference aspects. Better ISO performance? More shallow depth of field? Better autofocus system? Wifi? MFA? Best in low light? Do you typically shoot wide aperture? Or do you stop down a lot?

Very best,
